Thank you snaffles. You have given me plenty of food for thought. I really like IreneMs work and sure would like to try a similar shot some time. I need a remote flash! As for this shot I am happy with the score. I realised it lacked sharpness when I submitted it. Something I knew I would get marked down on!
Thanks for the kind comments! James. |

Greetings from the Critique Club!
Initial Impression: A fun, playful, clean shot and yes I also tried to brush the crayon 'crumbs' off my screen! And cool double-colour crayon, where were those when I was growing up?!
Technical: I like the comp and leading lines here. Light is quite good but risks being flat, and that teeny little shadow gives the shot some dof. Focus is a little soft. I have that lens in MF, and it really makes you work for a sharply-focused macro.
Artistic: No problems with the concept here, and the execution is very good, but macros (and the dpc crowd) demand tack-sharp focus. I see you're also where I am at in terms of lights; you could use a secondary light to knock out that shadow if you wanted to.
FWIW: In a word, or name... IreneM. Even better, try to replicate one of her shots! After resizing your pics, try a couple of passes with unsharp mask and see if you like the result.
Overall a very pleasing pic to look at, I think you're going in the right direction. Good work!
Feel free to PM me with any questions.

haha. I love the work you did to put those two colors together. It's very simple, color's not great but it's an interesting shot nonetheless. I give it higher marks because of the wow factor you can't explain about an image. |

Nice shot, the lighting IMO is a little bright, I don't know if the shadow of the crayon would have helped it or not. JMO! |

The image meets the subject matter. A sound demonstration of the creative process in meeting the challenge in a very unusual way. A couple of minor detail problems as the image appears to be less than sharp. The DOF could have been used more effectively. The overly blank background isn't a good choice. A good solid entry into the challenge. |
