Despite what people seem to think, there actually wasn't a huge amount of postprocessing done here... The painted look was very literally there - the lady in the picture (Frankie) is artistically inclined, and painted herself before the shoot (she got told to go with a darkness/demon theme, and this is what came out of it).
In terms of the setup - the shot was done at nighttime outdoors, and she was lit by fire from all sides (thank you Ludi, Bessie and Beth for helping!), hence the warm, uneven flickering light from all sides. It was shot with a borrowed 70-200 f2.8 zoom, allowing me to just use the fire for lighting. I really should learn to use flashes one of these days, but burning torches, staffs and fans seemed way more authentic somehow :)
Anyway, the only major bit of post-processing was making the eyes much greener than they were to start off with. Everything else was pretty much there in the original shot, I just used a lot of soft light layers and dodging and burning to make it more dark and moody. Oh, and loooads of usm on the eyes, you can probably tell that I accidentally focused on her hand instead... Anyway, it was fun to watch how this one did, and thanks for all the comments :) |

This is amazing, Jelena! I didn't vote this challenge so I missed it the first time around. Very clever and well executed. |

Very meaningful portrait, reminding us that we are better off being ignorant, but then again, I'm a science guy. I love the composition, very artistic and framed well. It's ok to focus on the hand in this case, perhaps your aperture was a bit wide? |

This was a very visually arresting picture. Disappointed to find it so low down. Maybe you can share with us what you did to get the effect. |

Nice post processing. The subject must have brushed a self portrait by the look of the paint left over on her hands! ;-) |

I am confused. This one seems to be a photo of a painting. If isn't , congratulations for this amazing characterization.
I am coming back to vote. well deserved 10 |

Renaissance artists studied perspective, or the differences in the way things look when they are close to something or far away. The artists painted in a way that showed these differences which, as a by product, showed depth and dimension. One of the more interesting aspect of this period was the expression of the not real being real. This is as good a demonstration of these concepts as this reviewer has ever seen. Incredible and effective - a technical and artistic demonstration of the power of photography as art. A standing O. |
