I lit the spots on the lava rock using a penlight/maglight with electricians tape over the light's lens and a hole punched through it. I also combined yellow and magenta gels (also taped to the light) to create the orange glow. I went around and held the penlight right on each spot because the amount of light I was getting was really tiny.

I back-lit this with a regular flashlight and threw a gel on to fill in the shadow with some blue light. I'm not really pleased with the blue fill, but this was the best image I had so...I went with it anyway.

The sand is the same sand used in my "Sands of Time" image. Yeah, unfortunately I couldn't think of anything better for a background.

This is far from the "completed image" I was hoping to achieve. Every time I look at it I see something else that I could have done better. But frankly, after about 15 of these 5 minute exposures, I was quite fed up with the whole thing and just entered my best one.

No matter how I finish, I'm just happy I finally came up with something for a challenge! :D

I love your very creative technique. You pulled it off nicely and I think that had the details been available to voters, this shot would have been better appreciated and scored higher.

An interesting subject. The crop on the sides though is a little tight, as is the crop above. A little mmore space would hve balanced the photo

Reminded me of the Rolling Stones "...Hot Rocks"! It's a very nice presentation and the lighting is intriguing!
