Terry, this has to be one of THE best photos in the animals section, so far. (I just remembered the photo Not So Soft {I think was the title}, which is an all time fav of mine) The amount of detail in this shot is totally amazing. Just how close were you? (Oh 18 inches...) I love the irony!

For those of you wondering if this was telephoto or close up heres the story. I was at the aquarium by the ocean, and there were a lot of sea gulls around. One landed on a picnic table. I tried taking some shots with stuff in the background. Then I moved around it until I got a plain wall behind( new it would make for a better shot). Took about 3 shots from approximately 18 inches away(going closer each time). Then he decided to fly off.
By the way I think it is ironic that my best shot at the aquarium was of a bird!

I love Cornwall, and that's the place to shoot gulls! and I got plenty of 'em! Nice profile; yellow and black works great!

Good. Title was a little misleading----however I didn't take that into consideration when I voted. The composition and simplicity are effective.

a closer crop would have made this a perfect photo IMO....nice focus

Is this thing alive or stuffed. His eye matches his beak. Guess with a chest like that it could be a her eye. Very clean clear well cropped shot. Quality wise it deserves a 10, but somehow I can't see it getting first place. Still must give it the 10. Don't think others will though. PTL

Great use of telephoto to get "close up"

I'm not sure I would want to get that close to a Gull. Nice shot, the colors are excellent! DPz

Wonderful picture! A 9 from me, and it would have been 10 if the bird were not so much on the left side of the photo. In my estimation, the composition would have been better had you been able to place the bird a little more to the right. Bitz
