Face painting session I captured via full-zoom (270mm) at a friend's elementary school Fall Festival. I was told that the design was called "Half-Butterfly". I like the way her eyelashes show from the hidden side of her face, so I chose the name "Butterfly Kisses". I wasn't aware of this challenge when I took the photo, but when I came across it today, I remembered the scene from the weekend. Sometimes, it just pays to keep your finger on the trigger. (270mm, F6.3, 1/60, ISO-800)

Hi from a member of the Critique Club!

You asked that your photograph be critiqued by a member of the Critique Club in this challenge.

This is a nice shot, what would have helped you is focus. Your focus is very soft. I see that your ISO is fairly high here so it may have been a darker room and that is why you needed more ISO. Sharpness would be the key in this shot, You have a nice blurred background that does compliment the face with its lighter colours. The score reflects your lack of focus and sharpness.,

You did okay for your first entry and I look forward to seeing more from you!

Thank you all for the feedback! I really enjoy the prospect of learning and evolving, and I'm not the best judge of my own product.

This entry was a little opportunistic. I happened to catch the shot just prior to learning about this contest. Though the event was outdoors on a bright sunny day, the face painting was done in a dark shaded area of the school. Since all the comments below, I'm spending a lot of time practicing and learning about light and its effect on exposure.

Too much motion blur from zooming that far in, you would need to use a much faster shutter speed to get that sharp, like 1/400th.

Good first attempt though, keep at it and you will learn a lot from this site.

Nice idea, the image is oof, and a little underexposed, or lacking contrast. 5

Beautiful face paint art. I so wish there was a little more focus on the design.

this image would be better if it was in focus.

I like his face paint, very colorful. The photo seems soft and perhaps slightly motion blurred, however.

A bit out of focus and flat. A punch in the colours and shadows would improve a bit this photo.

Too soft/moved/out of focus for me. But the paintjob is nice.

Out of focus, motion blurred .... B&W kinda makes that sort of photo work leastways for me. I really like the way you've captured so much feeling here.

Focus is way too soft, colors look soft too. Try fixing your focus, and increase your saturation for sure.

The artist did a great job. If only it was in focus.

this would be a nice portrait but its so blurry! a bit of eye contact from the model would also make the image more engaging.

Nice artwork on the child but the lack of focus and colour saturation kills it sorry!

Focus is missing and that's a real shame.
