thanks, Steve!

I tried the grain like you mentioned but it looked as though the umbrella was fake. I should have submited the one without grain. Oh well, a lesson I will never learn. Creativity burns in my soul. :-)

I'm shocked to see this one so low. Many commenters seem to think that you didn't notice the grain, or that it is there on accident. I think it would be difficult to get this much grain in your camera on accident - it is very obviously done on purpose, and I find it to be very effective. One commenter mentioned that perhaps you could have left the grain out of the umbrella, and put it in everywhere else. That is an interesting idea that might have worked as well. At any rate, I think this is a fantastic shot, with a wonderful mood. Nice contrast in the B/W areas, and great idea.

Nice choice of subject for this theme.

Interesting use of noise as grain if intended. If b/w had grain and color did not it might have worked out even better.

A nice high contrast picture and you sure were on the right track, but, when you desaturated you also removed some of the green and yellow hues in the umbrella needed to make it's presense seem natural in the picture.

Nice photo, but way too much noise. Neat Image would clean it up a lot.

Strong contrast but image appears noisy and oversharpened (I'm sure it isn't rain). Even with all the sharpening, it seems the umbrella wasn't sharpened at all and seems soft. I would've done quite the opposite softening the background and sharpening the umbrella to further drive the point home. Even though the umbrella is in color, i'm drawn to the busy background and sharpness of everything else except the color of the umbrella.

I think grain when used correctly, really adds to a photo. I find all the grain really distracting here.

I like the way you desaturated, and the framing of the subject. Great photo for the challenge, just a little grainy. 7.

Looks a little grainy. Great subject, although it would have been better if you snapped it before they walked in front of the tree.

composition and lighting are pretty good, but the oversharpening kills it

Mystery person. I like it. The shot has a bit of noise but it's not bad and adds to the over all shot. I would like the right side cropped a bit tighter to remove the partial trees. Good one.

Is this was not so grainy I would have given it a better score. 5
