No hardcore editing; just basic levels and a little exposure adjustment.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

First of all, you were shooting a documentary, may have been on set, so may not have been able to leave your location. Having said that, I can see why so many commenters seem ambivalent this shot. It does have a bit of a touristy-snapshot feel to it. Everyone is simply too far away to draw us in, all we see are straining figures hauling on a rope. The POV is very safe. Surely if this were a daily occurence at roughly the same time each day, you may have been able to get a more dynamic angle.

Camera settings seem fine, composition bland though some attempt at rule of thirds. A few very minor nitpicks...some visible sensor dust in upper left corner, and fishing buouys, also detract to a slight but noticable extent. A lot of cropping could have been done to tighten the shot. Yes, documentaries and many movies are shot with such a long shot to give a sense of place....but then they generally zoom in on the action pretty fast to keep the audience engaged.

So that's what I suggest you keep in mind for now. Get the action!

Feel free to PM me with any questions,

Susan

This is what you call teamwork! Good one.

This scene makes me wonder more and raise more questions and would love to see what they are working at. yes - pulling in a net but they are to minor in the big scene of this pic to hold the attention

I wish I could tell more what they were doing in this scene.....5

The tree on the right is distracting, wish I could see what they were pulling 6

One that makes you go - what the heck. Nice job.

being so far away you lose the impact that this could have had

Without that title I would be completely confused as to what is happening in this picture. Tug of war with another island?

My initial thought was to wish that you were closer, but I kind of like it from this distance. It gives the scene (and task at hand) a sense of scale.

Very interesting scene, always nice to see other cultures.

A much tighter crop removing the tree and much of the sky would produce a much better picture.

nice but foreground tree distracts me.

the palm tree is distracting.

Its like they are playing tug-o-war across an ocean :)
01/22/2010 04:26:40 PM
Good grief... what kind of fish would they be catching that way? I'll be interested in reading more about this one!
01/22/2010 02:24:08 PM
LOL all lined up. They could be pulling anything but I guess it's a net? Lovely water too.

Looks like a tug of war but you can't see who's on the other end.

Here's a nice little slice of life, I like watching these moments. It's an interesting scene, but not particularly outstanding in a photographic sense.

Travelling around the south of Sri Lanka, you see fishermen hauling the nets the same way. I wonder what the fishing boats look like there.

A different angle would have helped this (:
