GREETINGS FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB
what a cute little guy you have with his engaging smile. No wonder you like this image of him. And welcome to DPC! You entered a tough competition with your first entry.
Since you are new to this, I can certainly tell you that you have a great feel for photography as this is well framed and you caught a good expression on your model's face. It's just going to take practice and camera technique from here on.
Others have mentioned that the shadow across his face obscures the best of his impish smile and cancels out the highlights in his eyes. A little careful concern for lighting will work wonders on your future images. there is so much to be aware of when you make an image. It will all come almost instinctively as you progress.
Finally, that white 'hot' spot to the right. When you understand your photo editing tools a bit more, you will rid your images of that stuff in an instant.
So again, welcome to DPC and I do look forward to seeing more of your work in the near future.
Alice

This is a great picture - would be king on a scrapbook page. You've done some very nice things here - he's off center, your choice of positioning vs. the sun puts shadow on his face, but it is nicely and evenly lit - probably the best anyone could do considering the conditions. Great expression, and he's looking right out of the picture at you. IMO, "perfecting" this picture would result in a loss of the natural charm, and reality of the shot.
This picture does everything you wanted it to do, and more.

A very cute pic, but the bright sun and back lighting bring it down some. |

A little more fill flash to lighten the face up would have be better, 5 |

Tee-ball was so fun, wish I could still play! The picture is dark but you did a good job with the harsh sun back there. You could improve this by using a reflector, anything to reflect some of the light into his face. |

Cute boy. With advanced editing, you could have lightened the face a little. |

Feels like a snapshot -- which isn't a bad thing. His expression is sincere enough. Voters might consider it too casual for a best of year challenge though. |

Great expression. Just needs some fill flash to allow for the knocking down of that hot ambient light. |

Cute candid snap, could use a bit of light on his face (fill flash). |

Probably a bit too snapshot-ish for a "best of" challenge. It's certainly a cute shot for a family album, but artistically it seems a little lacking. In particular, he's out of focus and probably should have had a bit more fill lighting on his face. |
