Challenge: Color Studio Portrait (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
Location: Almere Holland
Date: Jun 25, 2004
Galleries: Family, Portraiture

One of the 1st shot I've took with my very new Digital Rebel. Tamara is 9 years old.

I know this is not realy a studio portrait, But I think it's not a BAD shot.

Yes, try to "sneak" it into the challenge :)

Sharpened the eyes,
played a bit with saturation for the lips,
tried to remove 1 hair from her forehead.
Did some gausian blur on her skin to smooth it out,
some cloning (darken) for the hotspot on her nose...

I'm happy with 31th place here.
This was "just fooling around" with my camera the 1st day I've got it.
I had to do a lot of fotoshop.
If anybody is interested in the original, just let me know.. There's a big difference between the 2

Lighting: Fine, except for the eyes. With eyes that dark I would prefer more of a catchlight.
Pose: Nothing more to say than that it works.
Background: The pattern on the right is distracting. Her hair is the main background, so a tighter crop would have worked better I think.

Very intense photo. Lovely girl, normally I wouldn't like the red lipstick on a girl that young, but with this lighting, it works.

I normally don't like the type of portrait that is cropped as close as this. However, your wonderful lighitng and subtly soft focus make this a joy to look at! I would still like to see the rest of her chin though...

Extraordinary eyes, the skin tone is great, the lighting is wonderful, the only thing I can say that would make this shot better is if the whole face would have been captured. You did a phenominal job with the lighting. Over all a great capture !

Fine lighting to isolate her face. I wish there was just the tiniest bit more contrast between her irises and pupils so her eye color would show more; that could be a monitor issue though. A square crop might/might not make an even stronger "portrait" image.

One of the better shots in this group, but a little to tightly cropped for me, like an uncomfortably close conversation. Color and exposure are good, yet the focus looks soft on the sides- a bit more DOF would help.

Wonderfully intense look on such a soft face! I think the cropping makes it seem more like a magazine photo as opposed to a "studio shot" but I may be thinking too formally. I guess I wish there was something more to give me a hint of her personality.

Beautiful child. I would have preferred to see this in portrait mode rather than in landscape, to get the full length of the face. As it is, her chin and forehead are chopped off, which is a bit disconcerting IMHO. Excellent focus and detail. :o)

Amazing photo! Unfortunately I can't vote but this would sure be a 10. This deserves top 3, hopefully number 1. Good luck.

Very well executed, great lighting. Crop is a little tight for my taste. -8

looks like you used a wide angle lens on this one, or she's just too close. pretty girl

I like this but since it's an advanced rules challenge you could have cloned out that small shiny spot on her nose

The chin is cut off.

She is beautiful!

Critique: You are to close to your subject. Back the camera up a bit and zoom in on her. This should prevent any distortion. I also learned this. Hope it works for you.

Her eyes are facinating, although I'm mixed about the lighting.

A very nice portrait with a single light. Great model. Lacking in the studio-like requirement.

I think this is a nice portrait, however the lighting seems a blit too dark. Her head fades into the background.

The lighting is not perticularly dynamic or creative but something about the photo really draws me in... 8.

Intense! It looks like she is looking inside of me. Gold nf right right ear (left side) is a bit distracting. I like the lighting. Great portrait.

What a pretty model. I'm not sure if I like the crop of this though. It looks like you were trying to concentrate on the eyes, which is nice, but I'm not sure I like the top of head and bottom of chin cut off.

Beautidul little girl, but I find your crop way too tight for my liking. I would have rather seen a short in portrait orientation where you could have conserved the top of her head and her chin.

Wish it wasn't cropped so tightly.
Nice color.

A very haunting look. I would have prefered less saturation on the lips. yet the image remains strong.

I dont like it when people crop of the cheek like that....Would have been very strong with a diffrent crop I´m sure

good close up
a little too much light across the cheek bones in my inexperienced opinion
good luck though

Beautifull light. Her eys really stand out. Maybe placing her evenmore to the left would enhance it further.

Her lipsitick is rather crusty looking because her lips are chapped. Also, it is far to overdone for a model of this age. I know it is very hard to capture eyes this dark. I have nearly black eyes myself--I'm aware of how difficult it can be to capture highlights when the irises seem to disappear into the pupil. It can be done with careful lighting and exposure. What I see on my monitor are rather flat, black irises with tiny dots of white. Kind of unsettling. It might be due to overly soft focusing.

Lovely close up and gorgeous skin tones...very well done. The eyes have been captured beautifully. Not deducting any points but Q. Why didnt you take the shot in portrait format?

Hmm, were there some some editing done to the face? The piece of hair sticking out on the right side of the face seems to be a bit distracting.

This little girl has a very compelling gaze. The lipstick seems a bit like overkill, though, and the stray hairs are sort of distracting. Beautiful portrait overall, though.
