Challenge: Color Studio Portrait (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Nikon D100
Location: Kingston, TN
Date: Jun 26, 2004
Aperture: f/4
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/180
Galleries: Portraiture, Studio
Date Uploaded: Jun 27, 2004

Used a reflector, flash and natural window light to produce this lighting. I also bumped up my iso to 400 and used a ND4 filter so that I could get the church shown through the window without loosing it to being blown out due to too much light.

This is my number one pic to win, I love the lighting, the softness of the shot and her beautiful expression - good luck.

Lighting: The lighting works well, but the catchlight could be stronger. The sky in the background could be less hot, but I get the impression this was the effect you were after and it works well.
Pose: Wonderful. First thoughts were that she needed to be not slouching in the shoulders, but it works to give a feel of anticipation and nervous excitement.
Background: Perfect for the mood, but the bushes to make it a bit cluttered.

Nice use of the background. This looks very much like what you would see in a wedding photo album. Good job. Pretty girl too. 8

If this is a set-up shot then, your model gets bonus points for capturing the expresion of anticipation (dread?) just before heading in ...

I'm sure you are hearing this a lot... but this was supposed to be in a studio... (studio color portrait) or at least a studio like setup... I may be wrong however it could be a painting in the background?! Anyway... I like the soft focus, but I don't think the pose is particularly flattering to someone who looks like a beautiful woman, did you try playing around with poses?

Pretty photo and nice applicatio of soft focus. I think her expression would look less startled if the pupils were more dialated--perhaps having the subject close her eyes for a moment before shooting would do the trick.

It seems a bit soft. I dont know if you were going for that, but I think that because she is softly focused, it sort of takes away from the picture. I do however love the church, perfect amount of blur there.

Gorgeous photo...love the soft focus. I do find her gaze a bit distracting, as I wonder what she's looking at rather than the camera. Beautiful lighting. :o)

This is a beautiful, timeless photograph! Wonderful job. My only complaint is that her face is so shadowed. I like the backlighting, but a soft glow on her face would have made it perfect.

The background is excellent and the shot is well composed/lit etc. I'm not sure if your model has a lazy eye or if this photo just makes it look that way, but it is a bit distracting.

Very nice use of natural light to give this shot great depth and tone! Lovely bride! Great soft focus effect to make her glow even more on her big day! A touch more catch light in her eye and this would be nearly perfect!

A little dark on the bride.
06/30/2004 11:51:03 AM
I wish she was looking at the camera, but that's minor. The sky is very bright which pulls attention away ... beautiful woman.

Background is to light, the subject seems to get lost.

Lovely gentle lighting here. Very nice job indeed.

I love your use of lighting here. It really emphasizes the models natural features like curves, lines and eyes. She has a nice candid appearance that does not look "artificial" like many portraits tend to. A nice soft focus and a warm color palette bring it all together .... I give a 9

Stunning shot, wonderful lighting, and I love the dream effect, I think it would have been better if she were looking straight into the camera though but still its a 10 to me 10

Oh my. Gorgeous bride - and the effect of the soft-focused chapel is stunning, albeit a bit too bright. It would be counter-balanced however if you had bounced a bit mor light onto the dark side of her face.

Very nice. Could've been a lot better if there were some lighting on her face.

Beautiful lighting and use of soft fucus. Beautiful model too. I like the church in the background too. Great.

A good marriage photo, not a studio portrait, and too soft for my taste...
06/29/2004 02:51:18 AM
this is a nice wedding-type shot. the softening of the focus is a little more than subtle, but hasn't been overly done (read: just right). her face might benefit from a little more light / post editting brightening up, but that aside i think it's a bloody good job. especially like the soft glow from the viel... and her smile seems genuine too, which means it doesn't feel as staged... 9.

Background is not "studio-like". Some frontal lighting for fill would have helped.
06/28/2004 04:43:51 PM
lovely skin tones.
A bit more light or reflextion from the front would have helped turn this shot from a good photograph to a great image
good luck

the church in soft-focus on the background is brilliant in this shot. Her shy look also. I find the crop a bit "tight", maybe a bit more space around would have helped. Also it is a bit pale.

I like this accept for the cropping of her bodice. It looks really pouffy and ill-fitting. A slightly higher crop, or a slightly lower crop to show more or less of the dress would have made a difference. Because her face is in quite a bit of shadow, my eyes keep straying to that sparkly, white, poufiness.

Very nice shot. A little too strong with the soft focus in my opinion, but still a 9.

Soft light behind the veil is fantastic. Love expression. Only would of liked a bit more light on her face. 9 from me, hope you do well in the challenge.

I like this one. The look is nice and soft without seeming blurred, and the skin tones and colors look good too. A little more light on the right side of her face would have been better I think. The brighter background competes for attention with the subject.
