from the critique Club:
The main light angle is too high. If this is the effect you seek, it is okay provided the head is not tilted down as this decreases the light as it approaches the bottom of the face. The next question to ask is just how dark do you want the shadow area? Right now, the viewer can not guess what color eyes. The eyes are of prime importance and even if you keep one hid in the shadow, the viewer needs a reference. There is no reference here.
The focus point was at the chest and so we are left with a very soft image with some highly contrastic tones and the image appears to have gone through a filter as the tones on the forehead are rather unnatural.
There is a possibility that this is a self portrait, if so, the effort is very good in that the composition and backgtound are nice. While the composition is good in body placement, the facial expression robbed the beauty of the face in combination with the lighting. While lips are red, be careful with saturation. Even when I get perfect color I always reduce the saturation because once you boost one color, its opposite is adversely affected. The left of the face is in the 9th zone right next to the 1st zone of the shadow on the hair.
Okay, let us say that you want and prefer this expression which has its artsy attributes and that you want a contrastic effect. All this can be had by the proper placement of lights. Remember, there is only one main light, the others are fill in. The further you bring the fill lights away the more contrast. The object is to capture the light feel with as much detail because you can always do a levels adjustment to bring about the same effect but with much more detail.
By looking at your port I see that you are very capable with your camera. The picture of the trick or treat also proves that you can take a good picture. So, all in all, I would say that this was an experiment and I would consider redoing it to get the effect you want.

Nice composition but the lighting seems a bit harsh on the left and the expression almost seems forced a bit. Good pose though but needs some work. A 4

Lighting: The 'glow' is overexposure. This really needed a reflector on the right to clear up most of the shadows. A catchlight in her eyes would have allowed them to be more expressive.
Pose: The arm crossing her chest pulls the eye down with nothing to pull it back up to her face, which I would have liked to see with a different expression. Also, you choose a rather tight DOF for this shot, and then focused on the top of her blouse instead of her face. This resulted in most of the image being OOF.
Background: The white works well.

A very lovely young lady I'm sure! However, IMHO this shot doesn't do her justice. The harsh highlights combined with the soft focus give this an almost creepy feeling to it. THe bright red lipstick looks a tad bit oversaturated. Were these effects intentional? How much was done in post production? Questions that pop into my head...

Her emotions seem a bit ambiguous to me ... she could be saying "don't take a picture NOW!" Or ... possibly having a great ol' time :)

Focus a bit too soft.

I am a big fan of the diffuse glow filter. It seems to be applied a tad too heavily to her forehead and nose, causing them to appear out of balance with the rest of her features. The right side of the portrait is also darker than the left, creating more imbalance. Her red hair and blue shirt compliment each other nicely. On my monitor, the lipstick seems a bit too saturated, which kind of makes it clash with the colors in the rest of the photo. Cute pose, great expression. :o)

to me the light reflecting from the model's face is distracting and her pose looks a little awkward. Would love to see this with a slightly darker background and softer lighting on her face.

Very out of focus. Harsh lighting.

This picture is a little bit freaky too me. The soft focus works well. What's on her arms? It could be a bit bigger as well

Face seems to be a bit out of focus. Definitly a little burned out

Harsh lighting ... I like her expression though :)

I like the black and blue shirt with the bright red lipstick - that was a good choice. Unfortunately, the lighting is very harsh, your model's expression looks to be manipulted in post processing, and focus is just not there.

Nice catch with the expression. The light on the left side of the face is too harsh. SOfter diffuse light there would work much better. Or if the light went like that all across her face to give it the "glamour" look. The focus seems a bit short with the most important, the eyes, being somewhat OOF.

a little softer expression would have been more flattering

Out of focus, overexposed and looks blurred. 5

The contrast is too great. Looks processed, un-natural.

I like the expression, but fiind the super-saturated reds and blown highlights distracting. Also, the noise level is too notisable in the mid-tones.
06/28/2004 04:58:41 PM
A bit too soft on the focus for me
06/28/2004 04:55:36 PM
I don't like the grainy effect and her left side is a bit overexposed, but her expression is great!
06/28/2004 02:58:45 PM
Her lips look weird on the right half, particularly the lower portion--very smudged and overly saturated, like a clumsy touch-up was done. My eye keeps being drawn to that and the freckles on her arm.

I like this, I expect many wont....I can see the character of your model and I like the post processing....well done.

Overexposed face, strange color ... Don't like it.
06/28/2004 07:23:36 AM
Wow, lighting seems to be a problem with this photo. Detail is also lost in the dark areas.
06/28/2004 12:28:42 AM
Little too much diffuse glow on this one.
