Well you sure found a great subject for a journalism shot! That certainly helped a lot I think. Makes for a very dramatic and high initial impact subject.

Compositionally, I think you could have framed this a bit tighter and maybe used the tree and 'do not cross' lines to bring the viewer's eye into the picture more strongly ? Perhaps if you were closer in, maybe more to the left side, then these elements would have lined up with the foreground of the picture and 'brought the eye' into the crushed car more dramatically.

There is quite a lot of 'dead space' to the right of the street sign and lower right in the road, which doesn't add much - so perhaps a framing with the street sign completely showing (for a reference point - rather than just the cross street) and moving the car slightly off center to add the emphasis would help ?

Otherwise this is a good entry - the exposure is a touch dark and could maybe do with being slightly brighter but a good journalistic picture.

I looked for this shot all week. Congrats on finding one. A great photojournalism shot!! Focus and clarity are good, angle and framing/cropping are good, lighting is also good. Great shot. ~Heather~

You had a good subject there. Too bad you did not go any closer.

Good small town news. Pictures lacks in composition, though. A different perspective might have made a better shot.

ouch!!

Hope no one was injured in this story. Great after picture. Hope they have insurance. Photo's only problem I see is the dark red brick of the house cries to be lighteded some for the beauty of the bricks to come through against the beautiful green grass and white car. This would make a great shot better, the difference between an 8 and 9, maybe a 10 even. PTL8

Now that is a photograph to go with the story on inclement weather. All you need is an interview with the car owner. JEM

It probably could not be avoided but I would have preferred the photo without the fire line. It is also a pretty ordinary angle which I think could be improved on. Maybe tighter cropping.

I hope you didn't knock that tree on that car just to get this shot :) (yes I'm kidding) ~MyQyl ~

Ouch!

Closer is better. Get down on the ground for this shot.

Applicable subject matter, but I think a close up of the tree on the damaged car would have been more interesting. Or shot from low near the end of the tree by the ground. This angle would have put the car and tree as major subject matter. As is, this shot seems like a drive by/walk by grab a shot without thinking of a creative approach. Good luck on the challenge.

Sombody wasn't very happy. Good journalistic shot. DPz

i don't think a newspaper would have shown as much of the street as you did. maybe crop a little more. great photo.

Ouch !

This is great, you have captured the effects of the storm very well! How many hours did you drive to find this?! Can imagine this on the front page of a small town paper. I think you couls have cropped off a little from the right of the shot. Natasha

Whoops....poor Z, but the new one's are even cooler!! LOL This is just a neat shot, perfect for the challenge. Great find. Little bit dark. Justine.

Yikes. This image would be better with better exposure and a closer angle.
11/25/2002 11:37:00 AM
I like the shot. It needs to be brightened just a bit, IMO.

Nice how the police line and fallen tree lead the way trough the picture. It looks a slight bit underexposed and it lacks sharpness.
Also, save your pic at the highest allowed quality (150kb), the compression destroys the detail and that is probably why this image lacks detail sharpness. It would be better for the asphalt too.
Have you tried a lower angle?
11/25/2002 01:00:00 AM
I would have gotten in a bit tighter for this shot. Closer, more detail would make for a better picture.
