Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Bokeh VI (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-500D Rebel T1i
Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Location: UFO Festival, Mid-Day, very sunny
Date: May 15, 2010
Aperture: f/24
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/80 sec
Galleries: Animals, Black and White
Date Uploaded: May 15, 2010

This was taken at the 11th annual UFO Festival hosted by McMenamins in McMinnville, OR. There I saw an assortment of people dressed in Alien costumes, but by far the most intriguing thing I saw all day was this odd couple, an immensely obese woman and his tiny alien dog with fairly wings. Surrounded by a crowd of aliens all waiting to see who won the "Alien Pet Costume Contest". This wasn't the first place winner, but it sure made a great photo.

Editing:

1. Crop
2. Hue/Sat for B&W
3. Curves for a tad more contrast
4. Gaussian Blur

The editing was relatively simple. The crop only excludes a small portion of the photo to the left to get the woman and her dog in the right place, the light was fairly good so just bump of contrast with curves made it perfect. Yes, it's synthetic bokeh, GB did the trick just fine.

Gaussian is allowed, but spot editing isn't, so it has to be applied at the same amount across the entire image.

A nice conversion to b/w. The blur looks as if it was created during post processing, which works nicely for isolating the subject, but doesn't really seem to fit with the spirit of the challenge.

This would make an interesting free study too.

Amazing capture. Candid, impromptu.
(Use of a Lens Baby should get you off the DQ hook I hope!)

that's not bokeh, it's blur...
