It's early and the cold morning air coming in contact with the warmer water creates a fine mist over much of the lake. I love this time of year. I grab my camera and go down to get a few pictures of the rising sun and the mist before it dissipates. I don't see any loons but I can hear them. The adult loons have already left and started their migration to their winter feeding grounds and we hope they will not suffer any dire consequences from the April BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill when they reach the Gulf of Mexico. The youngsters are still here though, and you can hear their mournful calls periodically when they gather together in groups and continue to feed, build up strength, and practice taking off by flapping their wings and "running" over the surface of the lake for hundreds of feet before settling back down in the water again to feed. It's fun watching them. All of a sudden one day we will notice that there are no more loon vocalizations or sightings and they too will have followed some inner instinct that leads them to the Gulf. It's been a beautiful summer and fall in Northern Minnesota, but soon it will be time to pull in the dock for the winter and begin our own migration back to CA.
The old tires make interesting silhouettes against the water and will remain on the posts as bumpers to protect the boats of next year's visitors. Docks have to removed from the lake in the fall so the winter ice does not destroy them. In the spring we and the loons will migrate back to the lake and the sections of the dock will be put back together and hauled out in to the water, and then we can sit out there and watch the sun rise again.
Edit: Didn't have to do too much as it was a beautiful sunrise.
A little Topaz paint, dodge the mist a little, a little levels adjustment and increase sat slightly, Burn a little, Resize, NI, Border. |

Fantastic composition. I might have been tempted to do this in black and white. But the color here is sublime. |
