I wanted to enter this shot for two reasons: first of course because I like it and feel it has something to say but also because it was taken with my old Panasonic TZ1 which I still love.
We were on a trip through the Sinai Desert in Egypt when we stopped at this Bedouin encampment. The barbed wire is there because they have the only water for miles around and need to protect it.
The children are generally happy and are used to tourists giving them handouts. This little girl only looks sad because she's just been shafted by her older siblings in the share-out.
My wife wiped the little girls nose and gave her a packet of tissues to keep. The little girl didn't seem too happy about it - She probably knew that the flies and the snotty nose are a serious boon when appealing to charity!

Very disturbing. Between the bugs and the barbed wire ... just heartbreaking.

Very emotional and sad image. How those flies survive in a desert is anyones guess. Photography is a very powerful medium indeed.
