lighting is too harsh

Good idea with the low perspective. But the lighting on this shot is unflattering. We can only see a small part of the tree lights, and there are a lot of shadows. I would suggest trying to refine where the flash falls. You can block it with household items to make sure it doesn't spill out to where it's unwanted.

good idea but the lighting is on the harsh side, working with lights and flashes is a learning process for sure, keep shooting!
