I expect this to get hammered in voting, being that it is not a pretty image, and the elements are not obvious.
But, after the devastating flooding in Qld and the rest of Australia, I was compelled to enter something as a tribute to these events. The title is reflective of many people's emotions at this time.
The image does have all the elements, I sacrificed a potato and onion, in the muddied onion bag at the back right of image, and I feel so guilty because the onion was edible, and there was no fruit and veg on supermarket shelves when I shot the image. The string, which is part of a necklace, is barely recognizable, muddied up and draped over the duck. The red is in the coke can, and on the onion bag. The image does have three light sources, predominately the sun, I held a torch (with almost flat battery....they are in very short supply here at the moment) and I had a friend, standing to my left holding an aluminum foil reflector......and did I have fun.... yes, especially when my trusty assistant landed on his butt in the mud.......now just waiting for the DNMC's..... there are some things that are more important than DNMC's....and a return to the normality of doing a challenge entry is a welcome distraction from the surrounding devastation.
I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't fully convey the destructiveness of the floods that have been experienced, but I'm not fronting the mosquitoes, midges and mud for a re-shoot, so it will have to remain a quiet comment, rather than a bold statement.
We were in the very fortunate 20% in our town that didn't get water in our home. The water came 2 meters up our driveway.
My thoughts and prayers stay with the Australian families that have lost loved ones in these devastating floods.
And also to those hundreds of families who have lost family and loved ones in Brazil.

Really suprised this did not do better! For me the image is definitely worthy of a ribbon. |

This is the only one that evoked an emotion in me, which is what I expect a photo do to. Very well done. |

I don't see either a string/rope or a vegetable, sorry. I think DPC should have been more specific when titling the challenge. |

Good idea. But for me, somehow, the title and the idea is more powerful than the image. 8 |

Poor ducky looks like he's having a hard life. Nice gritty photo, really do think it's a great pic! |

Gives me pause to see such a cheery, coloful face in the mud and debris. The string/rope and vegetable required are not apparent to me and it looks like there are additional duckies back there ... maybe in a net, which could be made of string, now that I think about it. So not blatantly meeting the challenge to my eye, but an interesting image. |

I gave this a 3, here are my reasons why. I thin this is a great shot, I think it really makes a statement, I am not sure if this is in Australia or just a river bed, but to me, it shows loss. Unfortunelty, the challenge was very specific in what needed to be in the shots. I can only figure out one light source, I can not find the string or the vegetable, I can see sunglasses, coke cans and what almost looks like a rotisserie chicken in the background.
I do like this shot though, it is a statement. |

Great photo...well done...very creative! I'm not seeing the vegetable (if I wasn't looking hard, I'd not have seen the string) and, while I could be wrong of course, I can count for 2 light sources (the daylight and a flash)...I will come back to this one and pass on scoring it for now. :) |

Different from the rest, the soft toned are just what i needed after going through the other entries, nicely done. |

Superb. This image is truly artistic and haunting. The realism and honesty are a refreshing change from the silliness and caricature. This may be the most powerful image in the challenge. |
