Just my fireplace. Thought of doing this and replacing my motion submit, but I like what I have for motion, so thought Id try this one here.

~~~~Critique Club Comment~~~~
Hmm, we meet again in this weeks round of CC comments. :-)
Don't know if you like it, if not, ask a second opinion in the announcement for this week's critiques (General Discussion).
Composition (content)
Nice capture of flames and glowing wood, I think it needs a stronger background and the glow on the wood looks unnatural (I have a fireplace, a bit too purple/pink.
Background
See composition. I wonder how you could achieve a better background, it doesn't have to be special as long as it says "fireplace". In my old house we had a nice engraved black iron backplate and in this house the back is made out of grey stone with black marks on them.
Perhaps a smaller aperture and longer shutter. I shall try that out this weekend I think, I have no experiences yet to advise what to do really.
Camera Work (Technical)
Focus is good, 1 stop smaller aperture + 1/125s wouldn't hurt. Sharpness ok.
Digital Processing (technical)
The picture looks as if it was brightened or gamma corrected. That could indicate underexposure compensation. Autocontrast in PS took that brightened look away. Background became truly black and enhanced the power of the flames.
My opinion
Nice, but no impact and could be better.
Even though the fire is inviting, I doesn\'t fire me up. No pun intended. I feel it needs something more in the picture to set the mood. Books, bear rug, a girl, etc.
Pretty image. I wish the colors were bumped up a little because it seems a bit washed out. Try experimenting with levels, if you have that capability.
Colors are good, focus is good. I think that for me there isn't enough around it to give give it atmosphere, it just looks like a fire.
Love fire shots. Seems like the red needs more emphasis (esp. the coals). Nice shot. 8 Swash
This is an interesting, atmospheric image, but it really seems to need some levels adjustment. The dark areas are a little lighter than they could be, reducing the impact of the flame.
Flame is hard to capture. Congratulations. Unfortunately, the composition lacks impact. If I can come up with what's missing, I'll recomment.
Nice picture of fire, but not extremely interesting... Good detail on the logs. Would have liked it better maybe not so centered?
This is beautiful and would have worked for motion as well. I especially like the composition here.
Nice image of a fire. To me personally it is not ingaging, sorry.
Would never have entered my mind to take this photo, but it is awesome. Good luck.
the flames have an interesting stop-action to them. i would like to see more flames or brighter embers to give the photo a little more kick.
Pretty good shot. I haven't tried to shoot the fireplace yet. LOL I will. I like this, good action, color.
I'm not fond of the graininess of this pic. The contrast looks like it could be turned up some to make the black part of the photo more black. - Inspzil
In the blue challenge, I learned that photographing flame was way harder than it looks. lol. You have done a nice job here. I like how you have the wood in focus and the flame shows movement. You haven't frozen the flames, and I like that. I wonder if it possible to get the background a bit more black without affecting the flames. You might lose some detail in the logs that way though. Something to at least try anyway. A nice shot. Good luck in the challenge.
Good details captured on the logs. I can't think of anything to change, but overall don't have much to give as input. = 7
Great fire picture. The flames are so crisp. Looks great.
12/09/2002 03:13:42 PM
Excellent image, but the color seems quite washed out.
I took some shots like this one this week, too. Glad we didn't both send one in, yours will likely be the "fire" out of my entry. Good luck.
