Technically, this photo is sound -- great light (with caveats), perfect focus, nice post work. Whereas the subject matter is "cute", it isn't too much in my view. I think where it is less successful is in the backdrop: a bold featureless stamp of black. I can see that there is actually a dark drape of some kind that extends up the left quadrant of the frame, but it is generally lost in the clipping. This backdrop is incongruous with your subject matter. If it had been a white featureless backdrop, or some kind of relevant room, or a light backdrop with a prop or two nearby, the effect might have been less dramatic. That's the issue for me. The backdrop says drama, the subject says cute.
Another issue is the cramped composition. Whereas the dog is nicely composed, it's not the whole story. Its bath is important, and the tub and bubble items are a tad cramped here. Together with the dark backdrop, the composition becomes claustrophobic, and thus unappealing overall.
One noticeable artifact is the shadow on the washboard. I would have tried to diminish it with my light setup.
Of story I can't comment, because I don't connect with subject matter like this generally. Perhaps many people are in the same boat. For me, content is as important as form, or at least my interpretation of it is, and I always like to feel something about the photographer in images. I don't get that experience here. |
