 There are times when our dog will sleep on the chair and we won't see her because she blends in so well.

Most editing is targeted curves adjustments. Single flash with spot modifier.

The dogs facial expression is so classy. Like an old school portrait almost. It's comical. Very cute. My only critique is the little bit of paw that you cut off to the right.
