Well, most of her visible shadow falls between the slats (is that the right word?).

Oh, well, enough analysis. Nice rhythm in this.

Lovely image, Ben. I love the sense of determination /fearlessness that I feel in her stride. Great energy.

Mark, if you look at her shadow, you can figure out that the front part of her foot probably has a shadow falling on it somewhere that we cannot see, the front of her leg, the part we can see, is in the space between two shadows, and there may be a feint shadow on her dress starting just behind her knee and another toward the back. I think the shadows are actually falling away from us in the picture, and thus not at 90 degrees to her, which is why the leg appears to be slanted forward in the image but appears "upright" relative to the shadows. Perhaps you don't see the shadows that are there in part because they are not striking her in the direction you were "expecting" them to be. Just a though! As you can tell, your question "hooked" my analytical side, and I am fascinated by how visual perceptions are affected by our expectations (eg. Escher)

This is really wonderful, and yes I do love the title.

Thanks for the comment Deb.

My interpretation: without restraint... she is young... not aware of life's fences (running on top of the fence/shadow or outside)... bright light (energy of youth)... entering the frame, appearing to be heading towards her future (depth of field, blurred foreground), but unknown, shadowy, obstacles to overcome. Grow, learn, and age without restraint. Obviously that interpretation grew on me; at the time, it was all about the light, shadows, and energy.

An odd title, as to me the shadows indeed present restraints. You have the exuberance of youth, suspended, against the realities that chip away at our innocence a wee bit at a time. The light, though, offers a warmth - a chance to enjoy just the same. Hence, in an odd way, the restraints may be there, but cannot be allowed to be limiters.

And I probably need to take up drinking... :-) I really do like this.
