Challenge: Nude II (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Minolta DiMAGE 7i
Location: Altoona, PA
Date: Aug 16, 2004
Aperture: f 2.8
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/4
Galleries: Portraiture, Nude
Date Uploaded: Aug 22, 2004

When I set out to do this I my goal was to let the viewer know she was nude and yet at the same time allow her to maintain some of her modesty.

I only used one 60 watt light placed on the floor backlighting the area behind the chair.

from the critique club:
I like this shot. I like the comp, the warm reflections on the wall and the main light. The only draw back is the strength of the light, otherwise you created a very interesting pattern which could have been controlled a tad more to help out the star pattern. Whenever your lights burn out too much it creates a problem. Usually, in this kind of lighting you need to control the short travel of the light or the area immediatelly next to the floor. A piece of plastic diffuser is all that is needed much like those sold at Home Depot which serve as flourescent sheets, but cut into small squares such as 8x8.

Now, you must understand that this is an artistic effect and as such it is not received with open arms. Given the choice of clear distinct lighting and implied lighting the voters will opt for more definition.

The pose is wonderful and the toe pointed adds a very stylistic touch. The right arm is very well placed and the head drawn back gives a sense of serenity.

Being that this is advance editing you could have selected the light, made a layer with a a gradient radiation from the center. You could have use a warm yellow or simply the shade of the walls. You then erase the figure (the subject) from this layer and apply it with a low opacity, enough to create a gradual fade on the light.

To conclude: I like this image, it was very well done and the minor problem of the burn out area is not as critical, it is just that it is easy for me to point this out simply because I am very conscious of loosing texture with lighting. Yet, if you are happy with the effect than ignore my suggestion. I even find it disturbing is sunset shots and whenever the sun burn out too much it robs the delicate balance.

This is a very interesting shot, save for the lighting that is too sharp and intense

She looks more uncomfortable than burning desire. Interesting lighting effect.

I really like the possibities of this shot, but feel the lighting is all wrong on it sorry, but I gave you an 8 because I like the idea and the model looks really interesting

Bold lighting! the lines of this shot almost give it a kenetic feel. I like the pose you had your model take...I wonder how different the feel of this would have been if your model had tilted her head over her left shoulder? still a emotive and interesting image, Well done.

returning for comments.
Possibly the most exciting lighting. A very good pose and good general feel.

In my honest opinion I don't think this was tastefully done as the rules ask. The lighting is well placed, lending to the title of the pic, though.

Well this photo is string which is a good thing. The pose is a bit too much for my quaint British tongue. I think it would;t be so bad if the model wasn't';t holding her own leg up as if stopping herself from going toilet.

with that and the fact that she is outside in a corridor really gives me the impression that she is bursting for a wee.

now that is probably the weirdest comment you have received, for it is surely the oddest critique I have given, and the strangest feeling I have received from a photograph.

That aside she looks almost awkward and uncomfortable.

the lighting is creative and brave which show your artistic flair, but I think it is a Little too string for this photo.

The focusing is bad i am afraid. That i see no reason for.

Overall a gallant effort, brave and forgoing. but it doesn't have many traditional aesthetic qualities for me. POV is very good.

Interesting shot. Nice lighting and colors. The way the model is holding her leg sorta makes it look like she's struggling to hold the pose though. Another thing that drew my attention was underneath the front part of the chair. Looks as though something was cloned or blurred out. I'm also seeing a number of compression artifacts in the photo. While I wouldn't take off points for that,. others may. Still a good photo regardless of the things mentioned and I hope you do well in the challenge.

The lighting & the model make the shot. The chair's pattern is a distraction. Cropping out some of the floor would have helped too. Still I give it a 9.

Great lighting. Perhaps this should be zoomed in a little so you could crop that wall a bit on the right?

I love the composition of this shot. Good idea with the back light too! Position of the model is cool too.
