I cut holes in black cloth and inserted the candles in it so it would look like they were floating in a 'sea of darkness'. Thus strengthening the symbology of light/butterflies giving hope to banish the darkness.

I shot another version with the face of the clock on the candle but the lighting was not as dramatic as this one - plus I think it best to keep it simple instead of cluttered.

Yes, both butterflies are real and alive. Once I finished the photo shoot I let them go.

I was inspired by In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez November 25 is The International Day Against Violence Towards Women. It commemorates the lives of the Mirabal sisters who were three ordinary women who opposed Rafael Trujillo's dictatorship in the Dominican Republic and, as a result, were killed by the dictator. It is also a day marked to remember those who have fallen victim to violence and to stop violence done to women.

***I did something similar back in 2004 [thumb]//limnersphere.deviantart.com/art/Hope-Lights-The-Flame-12239938[/thumb]. Looking back there are so many flaws that have now been improved in this latest version.

And if you have gotten down this far in reading and are curious what other book titles I thought of doing but could not get done due to resources and/or technicals:

Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Alice I Have Been by Melanie Benjamin
Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
The Forest Lover by Susan Vreeland

Very nice. This could certainly be used as a fantasy book cover.

WOW, this is great. The lighting and the butterfly being positioned on the match head really adds to the over-all image. Great shot!
