During February, when there aren't as many visitors to RMNP, the big bulls come out of the deep forest. This guy was massive and much larger than his peers. An impressive 6x6 "royal". btw, the elk will drop their antlers in about 3 weeks (around March 5). This image was captured near the Fall River entrance.

It's not easy to get a big bull wapiti to stand at the edge of the forest and hold his antlers just right to form a "U" letter. One has to get out into the wilderness, find the animals and approach them w/o scaring them into the deep woods. The preferred pose is 3/4, as in this image.

The props of my choosing were the antlers of this large cervid. I created the letter "U" by coercing the elk to turn his head and look directly at me. My technique and success at this comes from many years of wildlife photography experience. Degree of difficulty was quite high.

This was not an "accidental" or "found" shot. It took patience, luck and timing. I photographed this animal specifically for this challenge.

| How did that guy hold still long enough for you to put those "home-made" antlers on? because I thought the letters had to be made by us from props. |
