In all honesty, he ought to win hands down. How interesting would it be if he did terrible or got a brown ribbon. By all reason, he cant take a photo that is not a Nixter photo.

moody, lonely, isolated, peaceful, vague memory, wander in the city like a ghost, appreciate the life/escape from the life...

Hey I'm quite delighted that Nixter is from the same city where I'm from....now I'll just have to find the locations where he shot his photos from...here's hoping.

Nixter is seven feet tall, kills men by the hundreds, and if he were here he'd consume the English with fireballs from his eyes and bolts of lightning from his arse.

Art, that reminds me of a wallet idea I had. Making a line of wallets for men. The name of the wallets? William Wallets.

I love that idea. ...can you make then in the style of nixter?

How's this supposed to work?

I think it works by not concentrating on challenge entries but checking out his portfolio as a whole (many many more than 64 images there) and seeing how you feel about them. I then think it is more about our work than it is about his - for me, I won't be seeking to emulate images as much as I will try to see differently, reconsider the world around me and be more open to the creative possibilities at any given point. As I wrote further down the thread - more about changing my process than changing my product.

However this is approached, one thing's for sure - it will be a most interesting and enjoyable challenge to view and vote on.

This has me excited as well as going into to realms I have long loved but never explored enough. Since my camera is still in for repairs - (more than a month now)Ive taken the plunge and bought another. No excuses now. Really looking forward to trying this type of photography. Going through Nixter's work has me more than inspired.

Amen to that.

I think we all oughta throw up something outside te challenge dates for a "Yeah, that's kinda the thing." or "Nope.....just doesn't got it." reviews...

Do yourself a favor & go look thru Nixter's favorites.

Yeah, I looked through his portfolio...

Advanced editing makes sense, and I know where I am going with my submission.

This is awesome! I´m moving to Oslo this week, and for months I´ve been looking forward to hit the streets and shoot people. I can´t wait to get started on this challenge!

ooo - this could be fun. I remember something i heard someone say about Cartier Bresson; that he used to find the spot where he knew the magic would happen and wait for it to happen - i get that sense with some of nixter's photos. Although some look like being in the right place at the right time without waiting for the shot - "Old News" for example.

Hopefully i'll have time to shoot for this.

I just looked through his portfolio, and wow he does some really nice stuff, I think i'll head for town tomorrow and see what can be done, he seems to use 50 mm a lot so i will force my self to only use that, should learn a lot even if nothing else.

Help me out here. Just returned from a shoot. Frustrating to say the least. Security guards stopped me. I have no problem with that. It's their job. So I ask at centre management permission very nicely. I really am not one for conflict. Permission denied with whole bunch of ridiculous reasons. One gets treated like a 5 year old kid. Well I say my very understanding thanks and greet the centre management. I did not want to keep her from chatting to her friend over the phone any longer.

So maybe there's somebody here that can give us some pointers as to what to say and how one can get around this. Really frustrated here. Anybody with experience?

What areas would they truly be legally in the right to stop you from taking pictures? There was no signs up for no photography. I get the feeling If had been taking pics with my cell phone... They would not have had a problem with it.

Well let's hear it from you all. Thanks

Here in the US (not sure of where you are, but your spelling of the word "centre" suggests otherwise), if you can view it from a public spot, you can take a picture of it.

If you are standing on public property they can't legally do anything to stop you. even if you take a picture a someone getting dressed in their bedroom through their window from a public street, you are within your right.

But also know that people are ignorant to this and even officers are too, so use good judgment.

I was concerned about trying to emulate someone else's style when I can't even identify my own. But then I had a look through his portfolio and saw a lot of moody, desaturated and quirky stuff that I like, but usually avoid for challenges because I expect them to get creamed. This could be a fun one for me.

I don't want to speak for Paul, but, when he suggested this challenge I think he intended using Nick's style as inspiration, not something to copy. Nick uses shadow/light, blur, perspective, crop, and processing as tools to create stories of mystery and ambiguity. His stories always have a punch line but he never gives it up.

I don't believe this challenge is about learning to shoot street photography, it is about learning to tell a story.

First, see and think as Nick (the challenge), and then go shoot something you enjoy.

(great challenge, btw...)

Great comment from pointandshoot. I also think that this is Paul's intention (in fact he did say that himself earlier in the thread). This will be a great one to vote on I think. Looking forward to it immensely

Makes sense to me. I really don't think it is possible to completely emulate another person's style. The idea of it as inspiration or a jumping off point works for me. However, there is a certain look and not everything fits. A DRAchoo waterfall or a Lydiatoo frog would be clearly out of place in this challenge.

(Nods vigorously!)

Though I am aware that like any challenge, people will take what they want from it and do their own thing - some may try to emulate, some may focus more on the process than the image. But if all this activity leads to a wider appreciation / awareness of Nick's work and the artistic message so seen, then it's all good.

I have to say I've taken a few shots so far but I've yet to create something I've found to be satisfying to me or that might resonate with Nick's work. Enjoying trying though.

(I'm enjoying this thread too!)

Thanks Mike. No Im not from the US. Your advice is certainly helpfull. I must add however that I have been in many US shopping malls taking pictures (getting permission beforehand of course) but this was many years back and was wondering if anything has changed ever since.

I really have been inspired all over again by this challenge and it has been some 15 years since I have done it and back then it was even more of an interest. Had I not want to do this kind of photography as much, I would have just left it. Im normally out in the mountains with no restrictions, or out late at night when nobody is awake to care about what I take of..
Ditto Pointandshoot. This is going to be a great challenge, if only I could reach the shutter button of my camera before the security stops me :)

Would I be totally off in likening nixter's style to chiaroscuro meets human life?
I'm sorta curious about this challenge. Should turn up some interesting photos.
