Not sure why planning is such a terrible thing. Isn't that what this site is about? Planning your shot and taking many (many) pictures to get the look you want.

I can certainly say I've never snapped ONE shot and said to myself... ok, that's it, I now have my challenge entry.

Yeah but the thing with this challenge, at least I had originally thought, was it was more about really capturing the action of a sport more then posing and planning setups and eye candy. I will learn one day.

Everyone clearly interprets it different and no one is wrong.

I just think that the ability to "capture" action can be just as hard if it's planned as if it's not. You have to understand shutter speed and composition and everything that makes up a good picture. If a photographer gets a really good shot that's not planned, maybe (just maybe) he's just one lucky son-of-a-gun. So the guy who just walked up to a tennis match (or whatever) and happens to capture something amazing (by pure luck) should get a higher score than someone who spent hours trying to understand how to get the camera to do what he wanted it to do (stop action, blurred motion, etc) and made his poor kid dunk his basketball a hundred times in an hour (I did do that once)???

I guess my point is that I don't see how a spontaneous shot should necessarily score higher than a planned one.

I totally disagree. Planning means you have control of light and can request something to be done over and over. Not likely that someone is going to walk up and get lucky - perhaps but not likely. You have to know your camera to set it up for varying conditions (for me it switched from dark forboding sky to bright and sunny in minutes and off and on rain), anticipate where the player may go (since you can't tell them where - as in a planned shot), deal with often busy backgrounds as you can't set that up, you have to figure out how to shoot where you aren't in the field of play illegally, so much more goes into an action shot of an actual game/event - hence the added challenge. Planned shots element much of that - you can tell them where to go (whether they do is another thing), you can redo many times over, you can control the light and/or shoot when light is more conducive (different day, hour, etc), you can element distractions in your background, you can stand wherever you want and get whatever angle you desire.

I'm sorry, I'm not saying these two types of shots are equally challenging (although to me, I can see how planning a shot like this could POTENTIALLY be a HUGE challenge, while walking up to a tennis match can POSSIBLY take little effort if you get lucky). My point is that this particular challenge does NOT differentiate between a planned or unplanned shot, just mentions the "capture". Both methods involve an action capture.

By the way, I did not plan my entry but I'm thinking I could have learned more if I did.

HOWEVER, i think it is really sucky that BOTH the open challenges had to do with sports, too! i would have probably passed this week if not for the DPL (and now looks like my photo won't help my team's score, either).

meh!

After the comment I received from Skip I don't even care what my final score is. That made it all worth it right there.

I also got a great comment from skip, so no matter where I end up, it was worth it!!! :)
I did get an interesting/puzzling comment from another user, but a comment is a comment and i'll take it!!!!

Who is this Skip that you speak of? Does it mean our comments don't matter as much? I might as well stop commenting then. Lol ;-)

No, no. I am one of the lucky recipients of one of your earlier comments {wink, wink).

Anyway, "Who is Skip?" What?!? Who is Skip??? Skip is a God, not to be feared, but almost to be worshiped. Okay, just kidding. Skip has been around here on DPChallenge for a long, long time and is a very respected member here. Skip is currently a freelance photojournalist (correct me if I miss a fine detail here or there) who seems to be doing what he wants in life and in his profession. He covers a lot of regional sports and is extremely knowledgeable on the subject of sports photography. If you get a comment from Skip you ought to consider it an expert opinion.

Other than that, having met Skip on a GTG, I can assure you that he is a great guy.

edit to add: This is my favorite iconic photo by Skip:

This photo would have been a contender in this challenge IMO.

You do know that I was just kidding right? I adore Skip's work. But thank you for reflecting on his greatness. Hope you didn't mind my comment Skip:-)

you guys kill me. thanks for the shouts; i hope my comments were helpful and that i didn't p!ss off too many people...

there were some pretty amazing images in that challenge, as well as a number that, imho, d n m c. all the same, i commented on all of them. some people got better comments than others; if you feel yours was lacking, let me know. it won't affect the score.

as i shoot and edit for a living, i have a little different perspective on things. i've put together a semi summary of comments that might be useful for some, especially those shooting little league or youth sports.

fwiw, each time they have a sports challenge, the quality of images goes up. keep it up, and this will be one of the more competitive challenges the site runs!

I appreciate your comment...thankyou. But I will say, without giving away my image, that not all images are taken with one subject in mind! Sometimes more than one subject is needed to tell the story.

while that is true, sometimes it just doesn't work out because the proximity of the participants creates too much distracting dead space. that's one of the challenges of shooting sports, trying to get all the story-telling pieces into a strong composition. sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. that's why most the most often heard words from sports editors are, "SHOOT TIGHTER!"

i'm really looking forward to the end of this challenge, to see who's who and what falls where ;-)
