while that is true, sometimes it just doesn't work out because the proximity of the participants creates too much distracting dead space. that's one of the challenges of shooting sports, trying to get all the story-telling pieces into a strong composition. sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. that's why most the most often heard words from sports editors are, "SHOOT TIGHTER!"
i'm really looking forward to the end of this challenge, to see who's who and what falls where ;-) |
Fair call!

there were some pretty amazing images in that challenge, as well as a number that, imho, d n m c. all the same, i commented on all of them. some people got better comments than others; if you feel yours was lacking, let me know. it won't affect the score.
as i shoot and edit for a living, i have a little different perspective on things. i've put together a semi summary of comments that might be useful for some, especially those shooting little league or youth sports.
fwiw, each time they have a sports challenge, the quality of images goes up. keep it up, and this will be one of the more competitive challenges the site runs! |
I really, really appreciate your comment but I have to disagree. I was still happy to get it but I think we're looking at the picture differently! :) |

Thanks for the commenting effort. I found your comment rather curious, until I read your blog post, then I understood your point. |

That's funny. After reading Skip's blog I became confused about his sentiment on my challenge entry comment as my photo meets some of his posted criteria. ??? Oh well...I like Skip, always have, always will. :-) |

yo, barry! pm me if you're confused. my votes are locked down. i've reviewed them twice and nothing's moving.
just by virtue of commenting, i looked at each image for more than a couple seconds, so even though i haven't looked at any image as long as the shooter has, i did try to see what there was to see. but you never know...it's quite possible i overlooked some subtleties here and there ;-)
fwiw, i was pretty much looking at the images in terms of being a decent action shot; if it didn't strike me as one as presented, i tried to look at it in terms of what, if anything, could be done to make it one. my summary was an overall view; there are plenty of images that would be exceptions.

Skippy: knowing what your are (because of your work examples), I am taking your comment as an award in itself. I would go as far as suggesting that every Sports challenge you pick out your personal 3 favorites and share them in the forum, will be a huge encouragement for everyone!

thanks, prash. and may be we'll do something like that. there are a few other really good sports shooters here, as well, that do contribute tons (especially matto).
and, to clarify or muddy, depending on how you see it, someone asked me for a little more explanation and this is a paraphrase of my response:
when shooting sports, you're trying to capture a defining moment that sums up in one image the essence of the sport. so you really want action or elements of activity that put the audience in the moment in such a way that they can feel what it's like to be there.
some "rules"
1) include the ball
2) no ball? include the face with an expression
3) no face? go for an iconic/graphic image that represents the sport
shooting sports is work...it is NOT automatic. unfortunately, most GWCs produce nothing more than eye-level documentations that something got in front of their cameras. i live and shoot in the real world where the pursuit is of the best imperfect photo possible. there are too many variables to control to be able to come up with a perfect photo...
which is why a little blur here and there doesn't wig me out. it's one thing if you're in a situation where your equipment will totally freeze something (i have a killer of andy roddick serving; he hit the ball so hard it knocked the sweat off his arm and my shot has those little beads of sweat hanging in air while his arm is blurred in motion). on the other hand, a little motion gives an image a sense of dynamic. the little imperfections also tell us the image was captured by a human, not a security camera.
it's unfortunate when people are looking for absolute perfection, especially when they're incapable of producing it... |

If my score matched the comments, I would be scoring about an 8.0. But sadly it started in the basement and will never climb out far enough. Those first half a dozen 1's and 2's, kinda hurt....

I'm curious how much experience shooting a particular sport plays into the voting mix. I received an incredible comment from skip, and some other lovely comments, along with lots of low votes. I'm also curious as to people liking/disliking a sport, or just knowledge of a sport playing into the mix (not on purpose, but sneaking in anyway.) It seems like the voting is pretty low.
I remember voting and commenting on a cricket shot and making a suggestion. The photographer kindly wrote back and let me know that I wasn't understanding the purpose of the shot because I didn't understand the actual game. (I'm thinking it might have been a Lutchenko shot.

Those "They just don't understand my art" comments always crack me up.

You have rated 167 of 170 images (98%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 60 images (35%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.7725.
The missing three were on my team. That was a pleasure to go through. Some really excellent stuff. Emotion, action, interesting perspectives. It had it all. Great challenge. Well done to all. |
