A revisit to one of my earlier photos. I've been meaning to do this for a while, and the onset of a promising sunset was the impetus for a quick drive up to Castle Hill.

Yes, you have overdone it. Looks unnatural. A good attempt anyway. Well done.

Over-saturated? You've obviously never been here at sunset...

A quick tutorial on how you got those stupendous colors would be so great for someone like me, still learning in photoshop. This is by far, one of my most favorite photos I have seen on DPC. Thanks for taking it.

One the most beautiful color combinations I have seen. It has such an "alive" feeling because the viewer gets an intense sense that the sun is almost "right there" shining on the building and the grass. It has the richness of a painting.

Thanks,
that's not barrel distortion though.
I don't know exactly what you're refering to, but I did fix the converging verticals which may have resulted in whatever you're looking at.
06/15/2005 05:13:01 PM
Very nice! there is some distracting barrel distortion though. If you have photoshop, try downloading Panoramatools. It's a free plugin including a barrel distortion fixer. There are some instructions on how to use it at dpreview

good job on the photo

Wonderful composition, and angle of lighting with regard to your positioning, I like that you have excellent shadow detail, and the that the highlights, though bright are far from blown away. Just a spectacular shot.
Where is Castle Hill?
I would love a print of this one!

boy, what a dilemma...this image is just like another one of my favorites, and now i can't decide if i like the red one better than the blue one. i think the red/orange is just a little too overpowering. this gives the feeling of imminent hell, where the other one, while also dark, seems to offer hope.

(i'll tell you what, it's downright freaky to open up two explorer windows to dpc and toggle back and forth rapidly between the two images...have you done that?)

Ah! My other pick for the winning ribbon. The range of colors you have shown here is almost sublime - the sky is a deep blue to harsh orange and the Green grass and yellow building make for a very lovely composure of colors.

I hate to have something to pick on, but there is something that just doesn't seem natural to me about this photo. It is slightly over saturated, but that doesn't really bother me as it's something that one needs to do on DPC and I feel it works well here, but there seems to be a lack of detail in the shot which looks artificial.

These main areas are around the tower and around the main mound. Also the small area down the right bottom side where the grass and the sky meet looks very false for some reason.

Overall this is visually one of the best in this challenge - but a touch too computer processed for my own personal tastes. I think if the photographer could ween off photoshop a little then they would be a much improved photographer because they have the hard part already sussed which is the eye for composition and color harmony.

I love this shot... the colors are unique, the composition is perfect. I gave it a 10.

10/04/2004 10:30:29 AM
Strong points: Lighting, lighting! You found great lighting and then an excellent subject as well. The golden glow of the tower complements the orangy clouds perfectly. The hint of white clouds and blue sky at the top is an added bonus. Composition could not be better with the perfect amount of nice green for a base. Suggestions for improvement: Downsize the border. Overall: Listen for the whistle of the ribbon train - it's on the way.

This is a wonderful shot, the balance, the colors, the overall look is very captivating. The only thing that bothers me a bit is the left side seems too dark, I can see how the sky is darkening as it goes to the left but it seems just a bit too dark towards the land. A 9

Fantastic sky. Nice contrast between tower and sky beyond. Great focus. Colors are terrific. Tower looks a bit oversharpened.

One of the the most beautiful sunset shots I think I've seen. I really like the sharpness of the building in contrast to the softness of the clouds. Very nicely done and the colors are just amazing.

I'm waffling between a 9 and a 10 on this one: the wow-factor is just off the scale, but the extreme colors seem to loose some of their effect on me on repeat viewing. Either way, an impressive photo!

This is great. I'm sure the red isn't natural, but it works perfectly here. The lighting on the castle is awesome.

As I look at this I have to wonder, were the clouds really that color? If so what a wonderful capture of the moment. I would like to see more detail in the castle. 8

the colours are magic, but it seems to have lost it's photographic quality to me. it would make an amazing painting, and will go nicely on your wall. I might have dodged the highlights on the shadowed side of the building a little to bring out some more detail.
overall very nicely done, and a well executed pirece of art.

outtanding lighting. This is what some of the other sunset entries are lacking - you show the fantastic colors of the sunset, but also have an iteresting subject being bathed in this light. well composed and well balanced.

Nice to see it in different conditions.
Very dramatic and sure to score well.

Lighting - highlights the tower perfectly - my guess is early am - very nice gold glow
Colour - The palette is perfect - all colours complement each other and are natural looking
Exposure - good detail in the tower while avoiding any blown out areas in the sky
Composition - good placement of the tower and low perspective - different angles may have shown more of the landscape (if there is more to show)

Wow, the colours are spectacular! I'm wondering, was this picture made with one of those blue/gold polarizer filters? Or is it post-processing? It looks almost unreal, and very, very beautiful.

I love this photo!
you have gr8 balance and contrast throughout and it would be sheer nitpicking to try point something out that is really wrong with this photo...
so just for the sake of it the nitpicking would most probably be with the horizon... IMHO it rather strange towards the far right of the photo to see the gap so different in that small section... the horizon being rather dark and light creates a large contrast so possibly look at cloning some of the horizon out or something of the sort.... but as i said overall ur photo is amazing and it would be real nitpicking to go to such depths

This picture really grabs the viewers attention. The colors and lighting are wonderful. It has an almost eery feeling to it. It seems as if this would be a popular tourist spot and yet you were able to capture it without people around it. I would be interest to know where it is.

Great colors, and a nice compostion. The top of the castle kind of blends into the sky, however, (as does the left edge), and as such, you lose some detail which would have been nice to see. Still, it's a great dynamic, and one almost cowers with what looks like an approaching storm. 8

BobsterLobster? The original is definitely one of my all-time favourites. While the orange hues are dramatic and rich, i feel they detract from the stark beauty of the tower and its lighting. A case of trying to improve perfection, perhaps?

Hmmmm.... I wonder whose this is! Classic shot - very nicely processed. For me it's just that bit OTT with the treatment, as the blue sky and horizon areas don't sit very comfortably in the colour range.

You have a lovely subject though and of course it's well composed, etc.

Cheers

Stunning colors thus visually stimulating. The composition is splendid and the PS work ia awsome. The only reason I can't give you a ten is that the oversaturated orange doesn't quite seem to fit the light intensity on the building.

I can't wait to read how you did this. I've never seen such beautiful depth in a sunset photo. Your technique with ap. and shutter speed, etc. is pitch perfect, and so is this image. I'm betting on the blue ribbon.

I may be the lone person thinking this but I found that this photo is way overdone in regards to dodging and burning. The colors are splendid and the subject and composition are nice too (5).

The composition of this is stunning - not just the positioning of that lone castle but also the strong clouds themselves. The rich golden light on the stonework is beautiful. The blue sky at the top contrasts well with that. The red seems unreal, I'm curious about whether it's an accurate representation or a creative use of a filter. Either way I like the result. Very striking. 8

Part of the fun of this challenge is guessing who might be behind the lens for these shots since the ribbon winners are among the better known, and we've learned their styles a bit. This reminds me of the work of heida, whose work has certainly been an inspiration to many of us. Even though I doubt that the sky was really that color in the original, I find this to be a beautiful shot with wonderfully warm colors. It should certainly become a poster on someone's wall!

Great job, what a dramatic and beautiful atmosphere. I assume the colors are not fully like they were in real life, but I think they are not too artifical to hurt the image. It all fits well together, I especially like the low light across the grass and against the tower.

In assumpstion this is Mr. Rose, you captured a wonderful array of late afternoon colors on this piece. I love the range in the sky; from blue to red. And where the red is, it meets very nicely with its complementing green. The yellow of the "castle" brings my attention to it with its strength and interest. Great image. My only criticism is that the castle looks just a little bit oversharpened. Otherwise, a great shot.
