The Hockey Newsby TwocentzComment: Almost crisp enough. I reckon if you print the magazine on newsprint like they do, you might have something.... Nice composition, just needs to be little sharper. |

Runner's Worldby ToddhComment: Bluer skies make for higher scores generally, or at least that's what I feel. Good stop action shot and nice use of DOF. |

High Country Newsby dsidwellComment: Too many hot spots in the water, photographically speaking that is. Generally I think this photo is a little overexposed. |

Geotimesby MarkS224Comment: This is a very interesting subject. Unfortunately the sky is really really hot. Might've been a good candidate to crop and also a more creative corner to corner framing of this large rock would've worked for you. |

It is so quiet you can hear a pin drop.by ladpupmoeComment: Greetings from the Critique Club

Composition - I think this is a very good idea. I don't really like the mirror though. There are times and places for mirror shots and I don't happen to like it on this particular picture. That's just me. Black is a necessity to the background though for good contrast with your subject. Good choice here. What I think this needs to make it just a little better is a little motion blur. And maybe instead of the mirror, you could've put something that looked pretty hard and dropped 3 pins on it like there is in the picture here, then dropped the 4th with the shutter a bit slower to show it moving.
Technical - I don't know how easy it would be to change the shutter speed on your cam, but the motion thing would've been good. There are always a couple things you can do to fool a camera into taking the shot you want. Also you could take the pic when its a little closer to the surface its about to strike, its simply moving faster there. The framing seems pretty good and the exposure is ok. The one thing that is pretty rough about this picture is all the noise around the pin. That is a bit troubling.
Overall - I think you had a good basic idea. The little touches like not using the mirror and trying to get a little motion blur would be more helpful conveying your idea without having to put so much in the title. I'm not sure what's causing your noise either. I wish I had the answer. Hope this could be a little helpful or a solid alternative for next time. Good luck - Inspzil |

Composition - This looks like a shot that might've been better from a few feet back. The little motion blur isn't too distracting, but not being able to see what the performers are doing is. Definitely get the idea of the sound stuff though. The percussion instruments in the front I'm sure are drumming out something thru the low buzz of the semi-interested crowd. Just guessing of course. It's difficult to visualize what the guy, who we can only see about half of, is doing.
Technical - I mentioned some motion blur. With the shutter speed around 1/100, it's easy to get motion blur and even easier with a handheld shot. Unfortunately that's not a good thing in this case. The exposure is pretty good. No real noticeable problems with the DOF and the editing looks minimal.
Overall - If you would have been able to capture a little more of what the performers were doing, I'm quite sure it would've helped your cause. The people in the front with their instruments were crucial to the challenge topic so they would still have to be fairly prominent to remain on topic. I think the idea is really good, I just don't know how easy it was to execute this picture. I'm sure if you were a little farther back, you'd be trying to take the picture through people. Well take care and good luck - Bob |

Bird Watcher's Digestby TerryGeeComment: So close to being so good. Great opportunity, but just a little out of focus. Its such a shame because this picture is so very close to being so good. |
