I really don't think this reflects the sprite of the challenge, everyone has two eyes. As a portrait, try getting about 10 or 12 feet from the subject and go with a f/8 (or so) setting. That would get most of the facial features in focus. Very important; focus on the eyes. That will make or break your portrait. Also use unsharp mask to sharpen the result.

If taken at dusk or dawn, you could of eliminated the harsh shadows. It would of also let you stop-down to keep everything in focus.

The tower looks like it's leaning due to the wide angle. Maybe taken with a normal focal length would of helped. A black & White version might of been more dramatic.

As someone who does a lot of HDR, I think this is one of the best I've seen. As as for not being "a very engaging photo", I really like going back to view it. Nice work.
