It's hard to discern anything of the character of this subject: it's so close up I cannot "read" anything from him. Half of his face is in complete darkness and the half that is lit, is so close up I can't see hair, or if his chin goes straight down into his neck or not...he's just half a frame of darkened skin at the moment. I understand that many like the extreme close up composition, so this is entirely subjective.

Just a preference on my part: the super close-up I find claustrophobic. It doesn't tell anything about the person, you can't read anything about the moment, and the frame is filled with a lot of facial skin... I understand loads of people like this extreme close-up, but there it is. Nice lighting though.

I think you should have submitted for the B+W Portrait...this is a terrific portrait...I don't see how it fits with the title though. Great clarity,composition and location.

I find the contrast too high: her skin has gone to almost ghostly white. Nice composition though and I like angle she's placed at.

Striking. I like the "breathing space" around the character. Coat a bit heavy on the black side - lost some definition, otherwise an eye-catching composition.

Nice angle. I like the inclusion of the feet within a fairly tight space. Also pleased to see an un-super close up of a face. Find the very tight crops a bit claustrophobic. Nice use of natural light with a split down the centre of light and shadow.

I love the subtlety of the centred subject in this. The eye is drawn relentlessly to the centre, by a seemingly insignificant subject. The red works brilliantly.
