Good shot of the bird. I think this would have been a stronger composition had you cropped out the white flower in the foreground. It's pretty blown out and out of focus so it detracts from the bird.

This reminds me of the work of Jill Greenberg (the photographer who makes babies cry for photos). Which is not to say, of course, that you were doing that...just that the composition and subject matter are reminiscent.

The sharpening and fill light did give a rather HDR look to the church. I think part of the problem is that it is completely incongruous with the rest of the photo which is bright and blue and less gothic looking. The white area to the left of the church is a little distracting and it looks like you might have a bit of perspective distortion going on because the church roof looks a little bowed and the tower appears slightly tilted. It's a nice looking scene...I wonder how it would look zoomed out a bit/from farther away.

For me, this image just lacks connection. It has a nice background. His left shoulder area looks a bit soft. I think maybe your position is a bit too close and low. It's nicely exposed. There's just nothing to pull me in...I don't know him, there's nothing especially striking about him (except maybe the shirt ;) ) and it lacks anything that makes me want to consider it longer which is something you really need when you're competing against 500 entries. Sweet bokeh, though.

I'm so glad that others liked this image as well. I didn't get a chance to vote but looked through the thumbnails several times and was repeatedly drawn to this one. It's even more breathtaking full size. I hope you're making Christmas cards! Congrats on the ribbon.
