This is a lovely image and honestly represents the theme of serendipity. The subject is tightly focused and the composition is good. You can see the tension in the drop of water as it is just about to drop off the stem. The slight bluring of the bug's antenna works because the rest of the bug is sharply focused. it gives the impression that they are quivering.

Serendipity: to search for a needle in a haystack
by Patoch

Comment:
It took me awhile to find the needle because it isn't in as sharp focus as the straw at the top of the image. When I did it didn't feel like much of a surprise since this was an obviously staged photograph. As a composition this photograph does not work for me. In order for the abstract quality of the straw to be really striking, the whole composition needs to be tightly focused. There is too much blurring in the foreground.

Surprise Cereal Prize

Comment:
This is too staged to work as a serendipitous moment. It doesn't work on its own as a good compositon.Perhaps if the cereal box was more prominent and if the cereal was spilling out with the necklace. As it is, it looks like someone has just dumped a necklace out of a rolled up magazine onto a bowl of cereal.

Sure didn't expect that!

Comment:
It's too bad the image is faded and lacking focus because it might have worked. As it is, there isn't enough surprise in seeing a horse's tongue sticking out to overcome the technical problems.

This is a nice composition and it represents the theme of serendipity. I like the soft muted purples and greens in the background in contrast to the rough, grey texture of the squirrel's fur and the tree bark.

The photographer pays attention to their surroundings and it shows. They took advantage of a serendipitous arrangement of letters on a sign to make a funny, new statement. Not an outstanding composition but given the limitations it works on a certain level.

This is a nice, casual portrait but I don't understand how it represents serendipity. High marks for the overall image, low marks for nailing the theme.

This photo had possibilities but there is not enough contrast in terms of value. I like the strong shadows their wings have created but the photo is too monochromatic to be really striking.

The Flea Market: Serendipity Defined

I get the idea the photographer was trying to represent. One definitely finds plenty of serendipitous moments at a flea market. However, this boring shot isn't one of them. All I see is three guys talking over a box of bags. There isn't much to their expressions to indicate that anything delightful is taking place. The composition is distracting. My eye keeps wandering to the guy's butt in the background and that white blur at the corner.
