This isn't a bad idea, but cropping such a small area from such a large photo rarely works out for the better. The quality just isn't there. Moreover, the light is rather harsh, so toning it down and adding some warmer tones helps a lot. Finally, the subject is just rather blah. DPC is kinda overloaded on so-so flower shots at the moment and the magenta bloom in the photo looks rather sickly.

For what it's worth, here's my workshop. More than anything else I tried to just clean up the house fly. All my steps are listed there. FWIW, the demo version of Neat Image is a free download if you don't already have it.

I would have given it a 6 or 7. i really like the lava look but the boat in the distance could go and the white part in the forground could be darker. overall i like it.

The horizon tilt doesn't bother me in the least for abstract shots like this. Overall it's interesting especially the color. I probably would have rated this a 6 or 7. It would have been a good entry, IMO.

Kinda looks like lava. I would straighten the horizon and clone out those small white specs in the sky but inverted this image is great. I like it and would probably given you a 6 as is. Straighten the horizon and get rid of the sensor dust and I would vote a 7.
