The lighting is harsh from the on camera flash. I guess i am not too big of a fan of pet pictures in general, perhaps a window light would have been more effective.

Background really doesn't look good, and onboard flash has resulted in very harsh light with unappealing shadows.

Not a bad idea, but I don't like jamming the subject as far into the corner as you have here. Also you have something in the black background that draws attention. (I thought my monitor was dirty at first :-P)

great expression, but you may want to get him outside or someplace with enough light to shoot without the flash, or you could try shooting with bounced flash and slow down (drag) the shutter
