Companionsby pamelasueComment by PHOTOKID: Hi Pam,
In the photo, I would say the thing that threw off the voters the most was the horizon, to me (partilly cross-eyed) it sees a bit tilted to the left. Also the gravestone in the foreground probably should have been full or omitted because this is what gives the feeling of being tilted. I havent yet studied the minimalism rule set yet but I would have said a bit of hue and saturation would have helped the sky color.

Companionsby pamelasueComment by howzit: Pam, this shot is definately not sub 5 material in my opinion. I didn't vote in this challenge, but I am guessing it lost points in the framing of the shot. Your horizon if tilted down from right to left - although that may very well have been your intent. Also, the gravestone in front is cut off a little at the bottom. I can't see how you could have cropped out the other trees without it cutting into your subject itself. The tree certainly creates a silhouetted effect you were going for. Thanks for sharing. |

interrogationby pamelasueComment by tate: A little more light tone would make this a 9 for me ... this way it's a 7.9 which is an 8 after being rounded up. |

Me ...by pamelasueComment by mpeters: Looks like a nice low key image. Maybe step out a few feet from your BG next time and try bouncing the flash on a white board placed to one side of your body to provide some shadowing/modeling on your face. |

Minkby pamelasueComment by DrAchoo: The technicals: The focus is there, but the image is quite soft for two reasons. 1) You are using the 50mm 1.8 at 1.8 (that leads to some softening) and the 1/50th shutter speed probably led to a little motion blur. It's not the end of the world, but it does detract some from the image.
The feel: I do like the vertical composition and the interesting lights in the top half. The woman, our subject, is lost however a bit against the dark car. We do not see her face which is a negative as well. Street photography should be capturing the human condition. This means, to me, either an interesting happening, or a mundane scene which also shows something in the face of the people captured. This shot lacks that aspect which is probably crucial. (BTW, I gave it a 5, mainly for the interesting lights)
The game: See the feel. I think that's what people were looking for. A third option was to capture a nostalgia or an interesting geometric pattern. MAK's bike scene which ribboned would be the first of those two. |
