A Tiny Giant...by NeoScalesComment: Thanks for everyone who "got" the image. This is really a one of a kind image and was quite difficult to shoot and light properly. I used a reflector to help "push" the light inside the egg area.
I agree with all of the critics about the eye focus. The problem was that the head is still inside the egg and still coved by thick gelatinous protein (just like chicken eggs whites). So getting that area into sharp focus was something I didnât accomplish with this shot. But I did get the nose and strands in very clear focus, so the image worked on that level. As for the crop, it's tight to show the extream detail and the position is "true life".
There were several comments made out of patent ignorance of the subject matter. Those were interesting to read, even if a bit melodramatic. Any reaction is good feedback, and I already knew the âickyâ factor would be there for some.
Iâm not thrilled coming in at 372 out of 531 with this image. But then again, I could have played it safe with another image if the score was that important I guess.
My congrats to the few that identified this as a Retic! |

Feather in the windby nicklevyComment: I feel for your voting woes Nick. The "Light" challenge description intentionally included the languageâ¦
"Any definition of the word is acceptable for this challenge"
â¦and that should be the judging standard for that aspect of the score. For someone to broadly adjust their voting score because they personally would prefer a more narrow definition smacks of egotism and does little for the photographers participating, unless you include discouragement as a goal.
The image is in clear focus and well lit. However as othes have said, the facial hair is scraggly and distracting and the overall impact is lessened for me.
Maybe I'll also take points off for it being in Black & White...I don't think they should be in the challenge ; )

Dragon Fireby NeoScalesComment: Thanks for everyone who voted for this image. I had only about 2 hours to put it together with materials I already had, shoot, edit, and submit it before the deadline.
I wasn't 100% happy with the DOF, but in the end, I think it all worked well enough.

Cabernetby spydrComment: Color scheme is a little bland. The shot could be well served with a solid color table cloth - maybe a deep red or semi-bright ivory. |

Lest We Forgetby tgordonComment: Not certain what the message is here. I can guess the intent, but with this material - it should be demonstrated more clearly. Don't like not seeing the right edge of the Bible, it looks like it's sinking. |
