I think the photo is technically good. You mentioned you just purchased photoshop. You should check out Scott Kelby's Photoshop CS2 for Digital Photographers, It will really help improve your skills. That way you can really get a good feel for controlled edits and when to use certain techniques. It is one of my favs. Great Expression fits the title well.

The framing, composition, tones and detail with the people and the bird is fantastic. Black and white architecture is one of my favourite styles. This blows mine away, you must have been excited when you took this shot. You know it's good when it holds your interest, especially as the composer. I hope you finish top 5 at the very least. Ok you should win, just finished and only 10 I awarded so far ever. This is the very definition of an inspired well executed ell thought out photograph that makes me want to be there but allows me to settle on not going because these capures something almost tangible. Kudos
