The only reason I even brought it up, is because someone mentinoed not getting enough comments. I am very excited that my photo is just up there getting looked at, and the comments are a bonus. I've gotten a couple helpful ones. As a beginner photographer I really appreciate the comments, and want to try to return the favor. Besides, I'm a stay at home mom now and have a lot of down time on my hands. lol. (just in case you couldn't tell. :)) 3 days, 10 hours and 30 minutes till Monday!! Good luck everyone! ~Heather~
EXACTLY! Plus, I never get into negative comments anymore....ever. I never really posted criticisms anyway..only attaboys. So most of my stuff was pointless..a lot like my thread comments :-)
Hey..I figure you do with the site as you see fit. If we get to a point where anything is required or feels required..well heck I can get that all day long at my job :-/

i'm somewhat disappointed with the trend to not comment critically anymore. yes, i still get comments. yes, the ones that praise my pictures are very welcome, even more so when they point out what it is they like. but i know i'm getting a lot of low votes, too. i can speculate what it is they don't like about my photo. but i would be very happy to know. including or excluding the score. that's what helps me grow. so, please, bring it on - in a critical, but not insulting way if at all possible ;)

I started commenting with my lower scores first, figuring they need the most help. So if you got a low vote from me, I "brought it on" lol. Although I did get to my higher scores too. If I have something bad to say, I also try to say something good too. Of course that isn't always possible, but I'm pretty open minded, so it doesn't happen often. I feel the same way, if you gave me a 1, at least tell me what I could have done to get a 2, or a 10. It could really upset someone to get a 1, but makes it more acceptable if they find out that it only got a 1 because that person hates puppies, or whatever, and not that the photo sucks. So the same to you...bring it on! (nicely) :) Good luck with the Challenge. ~Heather~

gr8photos...
The reason I never get into negative comments is a lot to do with not getting into positive comments. I just vote and compare my effort to others. I get a lot (probably most) of my learning from that.
I see comments more for the commentors than for the receivers of the comments. John even made this point once that commenting helps develop your own photography skills. I agree.
I sit down with an ad agency, single photographer or designer almost everyday. And we talk....As a matter of fact I have a staff photographer with me as I write this..(he wanted to see this DP Challenge thing).
I learn a lot from that stuff. But I will say this. My comments I get from face to face meetings are entirely different than the ones I get here. I don't know if they are better or worse but they are different for sure.
What I have figured out about my photography from talking to live folks who live off their photography is this.
It's not enough to get a good idea. You have to be able to squeeze an idea for all the good juice. And that takes an eye developed over time. Which means shooting lots and lots and lots of photos. Editing and editing and editing. And going to live exhibits and reading books and well..you get the idea.
Contests for their own sake by and large kill creativity in my mind and if you participate in them you must seperate yourself from them to a degree. I come here for the arbitrary topic every week and comparing what I do to what others do based on the same topic...thats it. I never let it go beyond that. The site for me is a boon of raw ideas and the photos I see each week speak thousands of words :-)
Anyways..just one persons way of walking the planet.:-)

I have received 33 in this weeks challenge so far - are you saying I should give out 99 - I don't have that much time!

Well if you read my whole post, you would have noticed that I MENTIONED that! I said that I realized that the more comments you got, that it would become impossible to give 3 comments per comment recieved and mentioned that at least 1 for 1 would be nice. I'm not one to be mean, but for gosh sake, read the whole thing before you open your mouth! Sorry. ~Heather~ |

I'm going to apologize again for my last post, I truely am sorry, but a lot of the problem here is that people either don't read everything and get their facts all mixed up, or just take something totally wrong and if you don't have time to read the whole thing, then simply don't comment. You put words in my mouth that I clearly did NOT say (read my post) and I don't appreciate the fact that that happened. Take care. ~Heather~ |
