I think the new challenge is great, even though I missed a perfect candid moment this past saturday. I even had my camera with me, but I didn't take a picture, I kinda froze. I was on my way out of the grocery store, and a cop car pulls up. He gets out and as he's running into the building he takes out his gun. I thought, cool, and turned around and went back into the store to see a cop with a rifle on some guy, and the other two cops standing on him and hand cuffing him. Come to find out later that he had a gun and that's why the cops were arresting him. |

Very scary!! That would have made the newspaper for sure if you had gotten a photo of that! Wow. Glad everything seemed to go so smoothly. Too much it ends up much worse. This challenge is going to be a personally hard one for me. When my car broke down 2 years ago (even though it was an easy to fix water pump) I decided it was a good excuse to be a stay at home mom. My hubby has the car all day at work and works 12 hour days. I don't get to leave the house, and I am at a loss as to what "candid" actually means. Can they be taken around the house? I mean, not like anyone wants to see my house, but what do you think?? |

hbunch7187, I think that "candid", correct me if I'm wrong, is just a picture of something that in the process of happening, or has just happened. I don't think that it's a kind of shot that you go and "set up". I think that it's possible to take a candid shot around your house, like if something funny happens, or your kids do something unique that you just happen to catch. |

From my perspective, it's anything happening that you don't set up or stage or pose. I would usually think of people shots. It's a good opportunity to go out in public and attempt to take shots of people you don't know. If the person doesn't even know that you're taking their picture then it's gonna be candid. I guess some might expand the idea to include found objects, but I'd give that its own category. |

Hi Nancy,
So it means that we are not rstricted to anything. We can shot anything but it should include people, isnt it? Please let me know if am sounding right. I am really looking forward for submissions in this challenge.
Would you also le me know if you would like to see my gallery so that you can give your valuable comments.
Cheers ashi |

is it necessary to have people in your photo? |

Not the way I read it... It's just a candid shot... Could be people, animal, or anything...
However... Challenges here have to conform to the voters view of candid, which could be pretty bizarre... If you are interested in a good score without a dozen or so "doesn't meet the challenge" comments, you'd probably be safest to have people... |

The definitions you'll read in dictionaries for "candid" say things like "informal or natural; especially caught off guard or unprepared", "Not posed or rehearsed" (those are both from dictionary.com). I think that there will be a mixed understanding of the word by voters though.
Technically, it doesn't have to include people, but it should not be staged. This could mean even a landscape photo could be candid, but in general I would expect it to contain something living, caught in an action or mood. They don't even have to be unaware of the camera - I would say that Kicking Back from the "City Life" challenge is a perfect candid photo, although the woman there (Gordon's wife) was fully aware of the camera :).

Many thanks lisae. I didn't understand what was meant by "candid", too. But you explained it very good.

Uh oh! According to the front page, we all have to rent time machines to get these pictures done:
"Your submission must be taken this week (7/26-8/1)."

so, any bets as to how many 'just a snapshot' comments we'll all be getting for this challenge? *grin* |

Fortunately, I believe that snapshots are the essence of this challenge :)

Yes I think so .. I think I will have difficulties with that one because it's going to be less easy, I am more into abstract images. I have always been shy to take pictures of people. But .... a challenge should be challenging ? Am I right ? Lionel

LOL...that is a great picture! I am sure the guy was wearing shorts or something, but it looks like the guy forgot his pants! I love it! Definitely candid!

I think spiderman was being sarcatic by saing that. It seems like every week, no matter WHAT the challenge, someone gets in their macro of a flower, or a bug. Nothing wrong with that, but it's gets way repetitive. For example, if I see a swing in the Candid challenge,I think i may scream. lol. Some really nice photos, but I might go crazy trying to rate these. |

ok . We have the same word in french but .. even in french I would not be sure about the meaning for a photography. I think I will discuss the meaning with some american friends to see what they think.

Lionel [/i] Lionel I have been working on candid shots for a while now. If you see something when you are out don't be afraid to get a shot most people won't say anything to you. Here are some of my candid shots from the past few months. And yes it is a challenge:) Candid Shots |

thanks, h - you got it - however, i think that the discussion of the WEBSTERS on this will take it to that point - that a natural, unposed flower somehow fits the challenge - rather than what i believe is the spirit of the challenge; someone being "caught" doing something totally naturally, without knowing that a camera is aimed at them ... we will see ... |

Cor! Nice... (Connie's photos)
I have some candid ones I took on a day trip into Central London for hub's birthday - we live in London but seldom do the tourist stuff. I wanted people photos so took lots of candids. The subjects sometimes knew they were in the photos but these were not posed or set up in anyway.
London for a day
(Need to register and sign in with ofoto to see album)

I like them a lot ( one of my prefered is the 'sepia' one). OK ... I understand the challenge .... but I understand something as well after seeing those .... I have to be prepared for a bad score (but I will do it anyway) ... yours are REALLY GREAT !
Kavey I will try to look at them later (I am still at work .. I should definitly not go to that site ! grrrrrr ;-) ) but can I admit a weakness .. I do not like to register to view photo' .. but I will do it tonight to look at yours.
