Nice...

I have some candid ones I took on a day trip into Central London for hub's birthday - we live in London but seldom do the tourist stuff.
I wanted people photos so took lots of candids.
The subjects sometimes new they were in the photos but these were not posed or set up in anyway.

London for a day

(Need to register and sign in with ofoto to see album)

Ok I signed up:) And I love the first one! That is great shot! I can't wait to see all the candid shots next week:)

Lionelm, I understand, I am the same - I get lots of links to news articles on sites which need registration and often don't bother... but I find on ofoto it means the only people who go into the album are people following a link I've left somewhere, it just feels like I am vaguely in control!

Gr8photos - THANKS, that's my fave too and YES YES YES!

Connie - THANKS to you too!! :)

It's a good opportunity to go out in public and attempt to take shots of people you don't know. If the person doesn't even know that you're taking their picture then it's gonna be candid.
I guess some might expand the idea to include found objects, but I'd give that its own category.

I'm new to people shots. Do we need to worry about release forms??

I like them a lot ( one of my prefered is the 'sepia' one).
OK ... I understand the challenge .... but I understand something as well after seeing those .... I have to be prepared for a bad score (but I will do it anyway) ... yours are REALLY GREAT !

Kavey I will try to look at them later (I am still at work .. I should definitly not go to that site ! grrrrrr ;-) ) but can I admit a weakness .. I do not like to register to view photo' .. but I will do it tonight to look at yours.

Connie : Hou la la for your pictures ;-)

This is going to be a challenge for me also. School started and all the fairs and festivals are all done for the summer. I have to find people some how this week....lol I don't live in the city....

I don't think that it's a kind of shot that you go and "set up". I think that it's possible to take a candid shot around your house, like if something funny happens, or your kids do something unique that you just happen to catch.

Is it possible to see a candid shot, not have your camera and ask the person to do that same thing again or is that not candid enough (saw the shot candidly, took the shot uncandidly)

You may be able to make it look candid, but it wouldn't really be candid if you asked someone to do something again... I think this challenge is gonna be a good opportunity to get out, camera in hand, and do some peoplewatching through the viewinder :)

While I empathize with missing the opportunity, staging it later sounds, ...well, staged. I think you're better off trying for other moments.

This will be fun. I get to go around town pretending I am a newspaper photographer. Hee Hee. I am so excited. Not sure if I will get something I like in this small city. OH well it will be fun to see the results.

connie,
I love your candid shots. Scarey thinking we have to compete against you. ;)
08/26/2002 05:40:13 PM · #34
niice pics, connie! good job on those. guess the competition is going to be stiff!

folks i really think that the admins intended it to be 'candid portraits', meaning that they are un-posed 'found' shots of people. 'Found' meaning you discovered it, instead of creating it.

You can shoot without including persons but I would have a feeling you shouldn't then expect your score to be too high :).

Took a few 'candids' for my City Life challenge - see here: city life photography

Lastly, as some advice for how to get candid pictures ... One thing that's very good to say if someone questions you is that you are a photography student and this is your assignement. :).

Another thing is to practice to get the right angle for taking pictures of a person's height when holding your camera down at your waist or in your hand at your side, so that it doens't look like you're photographing.

GOOD LUCK AND CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE PICTURES NEXT WEEK :):):)

Sounds candid enough to me....

Wat do others think????

Is sleeping person a candid??
08/27/2002 01:22:45 AM · #38
Why not, It has to look like their sleeping though, I would say that sleep walking is going a little far. I am going to have to give it a low score if their eyes are open. Just kidding. :))

An unposed informal photograph.

there's probably at least one sleeper already entered - the 1st entry was made within an hour of the new challenge --- its a good bet that someone's spouse/child was drooling on their pillow ...

It seems like every week, someone posts a picture of a white anglo saxon male with a weight problem. Now this strikes me as odd, there being billions and billions of beetles in the world, and Ive yet to see one in these challenges, whereas of the mere millions of pale lardy things several get shown every week.

Personally, if the subject is actively reacting to events, then its OK with me. This will be difficult with insects, as they tend to be very static and not be doing anything. But it is possible to catch wildlife pouncing, or fighting back, or playing, all of which will count in my book.

haha......I was at a flee market this past Sunday and caught this photo:

Candid Photo....?

08/27/2002 07:50:33 AM · #43
that's awesome, lansnake. if it was in the time frame, that would be perfect!

i took a candid shot with my zoom a few months ago of a couple of young lovers in an amorous pose. that would have been great, too ...

I think sleeping is fine - although you know that's almost TOO easy - especially to fake ;) ..

Given my usual struggle to get something done Saturday or Sunday night, I am currently loving this challenge cause it is like stepping back to what I was doing when I first got my camera... carrying it everywhere and just shooting.

Oh and I love it cause I already have a shot entered, likely my best person picture perhaps ever. I even like it so much that when it gets crushed by the voters I likely won't care.... well maybe a little :)

wow, ag. can't wait to see! :)

this is going to be a looong week. people pictures and candids are not really my thing anyway, but yesterday AND today i drove past a really good shot ... but i was driving in the middle of traffic so i couldn't take it. is this going to be a missed opportunity a day? :O

Has anyone had a reaction from someone who caught you taking a picture of them? I avoid confrontation like it is the plauge so I am a bit apprehensive about just taking whoevers picture! I need some words of encouragement!

I've thought about that too. That's what kept me from taking a picture of the police arresting that guy on Saturday, but if the candid shot photo challenge was going on then I might have been pushed to take the picture. If they do make a big deal of it, it can be erased.

What's most likely to be "my final entry" this week was shot from the hip (literally), and turned out to be just well-enough framed to allow an adequate crop.

The subjects aren't recognizable in the crop used, so I never had to talk to them about a release...I'm pretty sure they never noticed anything.

Between this post and one or two others my fovorite thing is that we even have two almost completely opposing dictionary definitions from seperate dictionsaries... well at least I know that even using dictionary dot com is not safe.
