I just ordered My Nikon D200.
But the Store told me they are on backorder. 4 - 6 weeks.
Anyone here waiting to get their Nikon D200?
If you got it how long did it take from the time you ordered it? |

Ordered a week or two ago. They couldn't tell me how long it would take. I swear, Nikon is so lame with their supply. This is their usual mode of operation with new products. As much as I like Nikon products, I really really wish I didn't own a bunch of Nikon lenses and an SB800, I would definitely give them the finger and jump on the Canon boat. |

You may want to jump on the canon boat right now but wait till you get the D200. Its well worth the wait. It actually has better picture quality than the 5D. Trust me guys, you will love it.

I got mine about a month ago. I walked in the camera store, and the person who had preordered backed out of the sale. I bought in on the spot.
Love it, Its well worth it.

Ok, don't get me wrong here, the D200 is an amazing camera. It's faster in FPS than the 5D and has some cool options that are different and will allow you to take some pictures that otherwise might be difficult or impossible to get with the 5D. It's got different handling and build quality (specifically weather sealing I believe), but better image quality?
Hrm. Let's see. The 5D has a cooler sensor which produces less noise, with a significantly larger pixel pitch which further reduces noise. It also improves the narrow aperture performance and increases dynamic range...
I'm not suffering the delusion that one brand of camera is 'better' than the other, or a Canon fanatic or anything.
I just don't think that there is really any serious room to suggest that the D200 could have better image quality than the 5D. It's a pretty illogical statement considering the specs.
It's generally accepted that the D200 is marginally better than the 30D in bright conditions, but can't keep up in low light due to a less efficient and warmer CCD type sensor.
The jump in resolution from 8MP to 10MP and a very slightly larger sensor accounts for that, although the difference is reportedly quite minor when considering actual information captured.
The jump from the D200 to the 5D is not about the number of pixels, but the increase in the area of the sensor. This is a significant jump as could be guessed by the change from the 1.5x crop factor to a 1x.
I do however agree that you will love the D200 and some of the amazing glass made by Nikon. If you can afford it that is :).
I saw an 80-200 f/2.8 pro grade Nikkor lens in the second hand shop the other day at $45000NT (Taiwanese currency)... I bought my 80-200f/2.8L for less than half that... and my wallet is still hurting! :) |

I bought mine about 10 weeks ago and had 2 day delivery. In order to achieve that I had to forgo buying from my favorite camera stores and ordered from Circuit City. Also had to buy with an 18-70, which I already had.
I'm not only loving it, but when I went back to a D70 for a couple of hours I really *hated* the D70! |

Hey talmy, incidentally, that 18-70 has better resale value percentage wise than the D70... Probably not the worst thing you ended up having to buy. :)
I just found out that a cousin of mine has had a new business doing wedding/maternity/child portrait work for around a year. She uses the 18-70 with the D70 as her workhorse. She's been getting some great results! |

B&H wouldn't even let me put my name on the "notifiy when in stock" becuase so many have requested it. I'll probably just get their kit with the 18-70 also. |

Waiting two weeks to two months for a camera is a downer for sure. With performance like that Nikon could have vastly superior products and never threaten Canon's market dominance.

I think your right its the performance of the D200 that has placed it in such demand. Thus the back order! Must be one heck of a camera if demand out weighs supply!

IF you look at lab results of the D200 and the 5D the images are better, not by much due to the sensor size but lab results don't lie. The noise issue has also been addressed by Nikon and due to new alogriythms have reduced the noise to almost nothing. Especially when you consider the issues of past. Honestly either camera will give you outstanding results. As far as the 30D being close, not really. They are two cameras who are targeted for two diffrent audeinces. You are right that the diffrence in two mp's is not much, its the other options and how sturdy the D200 is that give it a big edge over the 30D.

I ordered mine from Vistek and had it delivered to me in two days. :) Boy was I happy. Someone at Henrys suggested that I probably lucked out and got one from an order that was never completed by the customer.
I had the D100 before this, and it pretty much blows that out of the water. There's just no comparison. Best camera I've ever laid my hands on. |

Can you kindly post a link to those lab results? Every test I've seen leads to an opposite conclusion. Don't get me wrong, the D200 is a fine camera and a great value. For what I consider a good head-to-head comparison, go here. Page forward through the photographic tests, the 5D and D200 are directly compared.
The only place where the D200 clearly bests the 5D is in light fall-off, which is certainly a function of FF vs cropped formats. You'd expect less fall-off using lenses intended for a larger format on any camera. Not to say it's not real, just that nobody considered it a major issue when shooting film, and it's even less an issue shooting digital, very easily compensated in RAW conversion. |

I ordered mine from Circuit City back in December. It came in less than a week. I had to keep querying their web site until one was available and then I jumped on it. Then I had trouble with their call center (in India). They said I could not order it, well it was in my cart, and it showed up on my doorstep.
What made it nice is that they had it on sale, and I had another 10% off coupon. My final price was under $1,400 |

I ended up giving my D70 (with kit lens) to my son, so I don't have a spare anymore, but if I could have bought the body alone I would have been tempted to buy the 17-55 F/2.8!
I wanted the D200 for the better viewfinder, bigger LCD display, mirror lockup, and weather sealing. I actually think the extra pixels tends to be more of a burden than a benefit.

Hard for me to consider the 5D as the direct competitor of the D200. I think the 30D lines up as the Canon model most closely competing with the D200.

Ok with all the Canon vs Nikon stuff going on here, here is what i found when i went back and reread an article in the april 2006 issue of Popular Photography, the D200 has better color accuracy that the 5D. My apologies to the Canon horde, and to be honest when looking at the numbers they really aren't too far from one another. To be fair, it really depends on what is important for you the photographer and what is going to be the best tool for you to use. For me is optics and how tough the camera is. I shoot in a lot of bad weather and the extra safety of weather sealing is great.
