I realize that many people started in photography to be on the OTHER side of the camera but there are a lot of new names without faces since the last self portrait challange. It might follow nicely after the lighting lesson. (though maybe not such a smooth transition from garbage and sin).

I'd be up for a self portrait or even portrait challenge ... if you keep it as portrait then people wouldnt have to shoot themselves - only if they wanted to ... :)

I've wondered about this. Every hobby I've ever tried seemed to eventually bump into a newbie vs oldie conflict. Newbies wanted to try their hand at something they hadn't tried before and the oldsters bitched er, um, complained about it being done before and therefore boring. One of the techniques I suggested to get around the issue was to have a oldster mentor a newbie so that the oldster got to see through the eyes of the newbie (by helping and answering their questions) and the newbie advanced by having the experience of the oldster (they didn't repeat the mistakes that the oldster was already aware of). Anybody got an idea how this might be made to work here?

...as an 'newbie', I'd really love this idea!
'cause I got loads of questions, but maybe I'm chicken-hearted, won't post it in any forum...
So - maybe someone knows, how and if it can be done?

So long - greetings to all,
Martina - KAOS.

One of the biggest problems I see with it is the lack of capable Mentors. That is not to say that there are not incredible photographers on this site that are not more than willing to help anyone. It is more a disparity between those and the number that could use help.

For instance, I am in my 10th challenge, have a ribbon and two top 10s and I most definitely would consider myself a newbie. On the other hand, there is an almost unbelievable amount of information to be garnered from this site if you just look for it and ask a few questions. The tutorials and How Did They Do That area will show a lot. EVERYONE should read these. If you have a question and are afraid to ask, search the forums as there are incredible tips and training there in many past postings. Go to the chat room and just "listen" for a while if you are shy. Everyone there is very friendly and will help out by answering questions, critiquing photos and offering tips and support. I would love to have a mentor but feel like I have a bunch of them by using all of the attributes of this wonderful site. In the two plus months that I have been here, my photography level has increased 10 fold. It still has a long way to go but I keep improving.

A hearty THANKS to all of my Mentors on DP Challenge!! You know who you are!

The other positive thing about asking questions in the forum and getting
them answered 'out in the open' is that more people learn from it than
just the person asking.

People who didn't even know the question might learn something from the
answer, everyone moves on a level, probably including the people who
answer the question as others chip in with differing approaches or
opinions. That way everyone grows and shares.

Don't be afraid to ask the questions - nobody is going to bite your
head off!

Well, they might nibble around some. But for the most part, the people on here are more than willing to share an opinion! :-)

well when i suggested the reflections w/out mirrors challenge what I had in mind was a self portrait reflection WITH the camera showing...

I think it got a little misunderstood..

I'm not afraid of an bitten-off head - I'm afraid everybody will laugh about my english - because most times I miss THE word or the how-to-say in english... *smile* Therefore I'm not writing more than two sentences!

I'm reading the posts and am really enjoying them, learning, very often are there 'my' questions answered...
Ojoj - I'm still learning (not only making photos, but also talking about how to make photos...)!!!

And thanks to all - did learn a lot until now...

What Gordon said.

But also, my email is listed if you have a specific question you want to pose outside the forums, and you can send a private message to any member from their profile page.

The forums CAN be a decent source of information but more often than not they seem to swerve off course and turn into arguments. I know that it is being addressed but it has gotten so bad at times that I had to give up on the forum for about a week just to calm down, screw the head back on right and come back in with a fresh attitude. We also have so many forums running that it is difficult to either keep up or find what you were looking for to begin with. Most newbies are a bit self conscious and shy at first and some of the attitudes in the forums can be a bit brash and overbearing which may scare someone off unless they are pretty thick skinned to begin with. As a mega-newbie I find I can't keep up with the shooting, the forums, the challenges, the tutorials. I haven't even been able to find the time to develope a good voting technique. A bit of one on one rather than posting something public that someone may rant about in a forum (or worse get high-jacked into a fruitless argument) would IMHO be a bit better for beginners. I've gotten better about jumping into the forums but at first I was kind of living by the quote:

"It is better to keep quiet and be thought an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt"

How about asking for volunteer mentors and having a section devoted to mentoring for those that want to be or use mentors?

That's a good idea...perhaps this is the opposite of that mantra: "I may be wrong, but I'm never uncertain."

An overlooked resource ( I think) is the Search field on the Forums page. Common questions/issues which have been addressed in the past can often be "unburied" there.

Seeker, I felt the same way shortly after I joined too. Asked in the questions forum directly for someone to be my mentor. Sadly it didn't work out. Not every one who is good at taking photos is also good at teaching.

BTW, last weeks pic. is a self portrait. lol

Oh and there is nothing to stop you from communicating privately with like minded people.

I think that lots of people are fitting self portraits into other challenges. We don't need to do the whole challenge over again. There were a couple in last week's challenge, and I know of at least one this week.

What the heck happened to this thread? A perfectly reasonable suggestion was made about a portrait challenge, but that was totally ignored, hijacked in favour of a discussion about mentoring! This was rather rude.

I like the portrait idea.

Threads wander... welcome to the Internet. ;-)

I agree, I like the portrait idea as well, and don't worry... the admins saw it.

LOL...I think I've done enough self portraiting in the last week. For anyone who didn't know, "Aftermath" was a self portrait. It was set up, no real black eye, and I had been laughing my butt off for the whole shot, but it was HARD. LOL.
About that mentoring thing: I might not be an expert, but I can give advice and opinions, and better still, I'm here, on the internet almost all day every day of the week. Only time I'm away is if the hubby gets a day off, which isn't that often, so please feel free to email me, my email is in my profile, or I also have AIM, and that is in my profile as well.
If I don't know the answer, I know how to find out.
~Heather~
PS, for all the people that say I look really young, you should have seen the looks I got when I was pregnant! I looked even younger then. LOL

Perhaps Jak is right. I should have indicated that I too would be interested in a self portrait challenge. I was trying to stave off the "Aw geeze, not THAT again" crowd I have encountered in other threads by presenting what I thought was a way to counter what may have become an inevitable gripe fest. I do not consider it rude to attempt to help by making useful suggestions but apologize just in case I offended anyone overly sensitive.

heh.. not another self portrait.. I missed the challenge that was a self portrait, however my 7 sin entry was a self... but I promise.. I am really not that mean lookin in real life! :o) now the mentor idea would be grand... would the the mentors pick their apprentices or vice versa?

I'd like to do a self-portrait challenge. After wasting about 30 minutes
last night trying to take a decent, in-focus picture for my passport
I've realised I need all the help/ motivation I can get.

Anyone know a good photographer ?

Do you want a photo with a plant growing out of your head? ;)
