So as usual I get bored at work and start thinking about photography, I look at the challenges and see this Wabi Sabi thing so I goggle it and see some photos that start me thinking about a nice still life with a bonsai I have had for about 10 years that just passed away, it has great shape and bare limbs with just one leaf left on the very tip of the last branch. So I think this will be a great way to remember my pride and joy for so many years and possibly have a great entry for the challenge. So as you may be guessing there is a problem, I get home and my wife had decided it was time for the dead Bonsai to go and had tossed it, so immediately I'm thinking NOOOOOOOOO, I never got to say goodbye and even worse I missed the shot I had in my head all day. Oh well back to the drawing board!
Carry on, I just needed to vent. |

I have my doubts about my ability to grasp the meaning of wabi sabi. I am, after all, a baby boom American. But I was sitting here in my lazyboy thinking about it when I had this flash of...I don't know what. The closest American thing to wabi sabi is a pair of jeans, lovingly & carefully worn out to the thickness of tissue paper, clinging to the body like wet silk, the torn places never mended, showing a flash of knee, or pocket hem or underwear. We love our jeans. The more worn out they are, the more cherished.
Or, how about a man's wallet, curved to fit after years in his back pocket, the corners blunted by time, the pockets filled with memories. |
You got it nailed :-) |

I feel for ya. Hell, I've even done that to MYSELF, no wife required; tossed something after a long time of staring at it only to wish I had it for a picture a week later :-) |

Interesting. That article points out a very simple and minimalist style, but leaves out an essential characteristic: imperfection.
I think this explains it a little differentlyr: //c2.com/cgi/wiki?WabiSabi
I see the entries for this challenge being all over the place, perfect simplicity to worn and old imperfections.

Hadn't read the article yet.
For some reason it popped up starting with #4 instead of #1.
I already hate wabi sabi
4. Cultivate Cleanliness
Nope. Can't do it. Too much stress.

Hmm I dunno about entering this challenge, I just took a beating in Art so don't really feel like having another sub-5 staring me in the face.
But wasabi? HA! I got you boys beat. Betcha I can eat all the wasabi, and then ALL the pickled ginger from all your plates to wash it all down. Sure my sinuses will be going like crazy but hey, it's worth it :-)
ETA: Well I'll be a goose fried in chicken fat...apparently my Sally Ann/flea market / thrift store furniture, clothes, furnishings and masses of natural light flooding in, olde-fashioned 95% of what I own is handmade or at least not from a big box store. So apart from the clutter thing I pretty much have it down pat.
Seeing I can't beat my bf in terms of wicked-ass wildlife shots, maybe I can do just as well or better than him in this challenge.

Just wanted to share this wonderful collection of Wabi-Sabi images that I came across. This really gave me a good idea of what Wabi-Sabi looks like in photographic images. Hope it's helpful to others here as well.

Thanks much, those sites helped provide insight and inspiration. Should be a piece of cake to find wabi sabi in my environs! :-) |

Thanks, Fred. Many examples show the imperfect, magic and beauty seem to be missing. |

I've read quite a lot about Wabi-Sabi over the last few days and it's a most inspiring challenge. I'm just not sure I'll have the opportunity to get a suitable shot for it :(

Thanks for that. You know very well that I meant the photos, not the subjects. |

The simplest explanation of wabi-sabi that I've found is: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect. Not sure this helps or adds to the confusion. I'm just hoping not to see a bunch of shabby chic decorative objects. |

Well, with your entry and mine there should be at least two which aren't ... :-) |

I'm entering something I love, not sure if it fits the challenge, I'll let the voters speak, but I am expecting a very interesting and erratic distribution of votes, this is definitely going to be one of those challenges where people will beg to differ in their opinions as to what this means! I had never even heard of 'wabi sabi' until last week, when the challenge was announced~ But I'm really interested to see what everyone comes up with ;-----) |

I'm not a cultivator of the tame,
no lover of smooth mulch and soothing rain:
the stony garden of my spirit grows
things never harvested in ordered rows... |
