Challenge: Framing (Basic Editing I)
Camera: Sony DSC-F717
Location: Cannon Beach, OR: View from Lookout at Silverpoint
Date: Aug 31, 2004
Aperture: F8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/800
Galleries: Landscape, Seascapes
Date Uploaded: Aug 30, 2004

Originally going enter this shot. But then this evening went and shot sunset at Silverpoint. Low and behold, bout 10 minutes into shooting sun breaks out on haystack, and basically the only shots I could get were framed, so it fits right in. I was pretty stoked to get this.

This is a view of God's Glory! This is his scene, his mighty, his beauty, I am just the messenger.

Editing: very slight rotate, crop, levels, curves, neat image, image size, sharpening (USM), dust and scratches, minor USM, border

The lighting here is tangible - a worthy winner. One of very few shots I can think of on this site where the light has such a strong role to play. There's a shot of Sydney Bridge in my favourites that has a similarly impactful vibe.

I don't know how close Cannon Beach is to Gold Beach (I said Gold Coast earlier, I always mix that up).. but I knew it was *somewhere* in Oregon :) My favorite coastline!

Anyway, as I said, congratulations on the ribbon. It wasn't one of my favorite shots of the challenge, but it really is a beautiful photograph.

Thank you everybody for you wonderful comments and votes (no ones!). Thank you God for creating such a beautiful view and letting me capture it at this moment. This is your glory, not mine.

It was pretty cool to arrive at this view point, hope for a sun break and get it within ten minutes, there it broke out! Then I had less then 10 minutes of vibrant sun on the rock, and as you can see, I made the best of it. I am just the messenger of this beautiful scene.

Here is the original.

09/07/2004 08:52:47 AM
The best of the landscape photos. The fact that the trees are further away and still framed it is what makes it along with the great sunlighting. Super job.

09/07/2004 01:19:53 AM
This is one of my highest votes - even though a) I don't think there's much of a frame and b) The border detracts. But the water, sky, rocks, and beach in wonderful lighting make up for the faults - and then some.

Although it isn't completely framed as in the sense of framing, but I still like this photo very much, and even half framing is framing enough for me :) (10).

Excellent. The atmosphere you've caught is very moody. The framing leads the viewer to more exploration of the photograph ... I also get a feeling like one is finishing a journey and coming to a river's end. 10.

Rediculously amazing. The DOF is flawless. The colors are enchanting. The mist is magical. The little dots on the beach look like people, giving the whole scene a sense of majestic proportion. If I could give this picture a 11, I would. This photo is going straight to my favorites list.

Very beautiful picture.
09/02/2004 06:41:49 PM
Do i sense the hand of the perilous Neatimage here? it has something of that slightly exaggerated sharpening and loss of detail inother areas that can come from that. That said - wonderful moment, wonderful light, great composition - with the proviso that it feels a touch too centrally balanced: I think framing this with the most important subjects more thoroughly ditricuted around frame would give it a greater sense of stability: for instance, nice as the light in the clouds is, lsoing a little of it would place that largest rock more strongly, and i think the whole image would come together that bit more strongly - and trying it by scrolling to obscure just below that topmost branch seems to back that up. Have you tried that? Otherwise, a very fine shot indeed. 7

A beautiful shot, great light and tone but the framing is rather loose. The branch on the right is a must, it bumps my score up by 1.

I would love to see another branch to complete the frame across the top/right of the picture. I might have cropped this just below the beginning of that top branch on the left.

Good shot, though!

Lovely - nice catch - nice framing - I like how the trees mimick the movement of the waves, the sand and the hills - everything seems to swerve to the right except the upright rocks that stans strong. the sky seems to hint of rainbow.

I love this photo, the colours the contrast, DOF. But for me it doesn't quite fit the challenge, framing is a bit weak.

Is this out by Gold Coast, OR? what a fantastic picture.. WOW. A *little* weak on the framing idea, (it seems to me like it was a quick throw in) but it certainly does add something to the photograph. 7
