essay, part 7:

I “created” this rhinoceros, first by shaping it from tin foil, and then by leaving it out of focus to bring out a basic shape. I looked and “saw” the image in my mind before I made it, but it didn’t feel any different. I didn’t create the image. I saw it and then tried to create the circumstances for it to appear. Due to my lack of both skill and perseverance, the image came out differently and better than I had seen. As a photographer setting up a shot, I think you have to be wary of setting something up so perfectly that the photograph merely documents it. Don’t ignore the sacred moment of creation just because this moment occurs in a machine.

original notes:

I shaped a rhino out of foil and let the lensbaby do the rest.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Hmmm...lensbaby + backlit foil rhino...why isn't there a Posty blue here?...

Very intriguing shot, the unusual subject and setting make things even more surreal than normal (for you, I mean ;-) I see what looks like some sort of motion blur around the head, the road behind and the plateau it's on makes me wonder if it's supposed to be a metaphorical end of the road for the rhino.

Liking the angles and leading lines, they add depth and intrigue to this mysterious shot. Good stuff.

Feel free to PM me

Susan

In South Africa we dream of stopping the Rhino poaching. This image evokes future memories of lost times past. 7.

200+ poached this year by Chinese and Vietnamese hunger for powdered Rhino horn. We have lost an average of 300 Rhino a year for the past 5 years. Soon they will all be wiped out if our Chinese butt kissing ANC government doesn't get off it's privileged collective backsides and send them a strong message...leave our Rhino's alone or forget our minerals...

That looks like a fine specimen. The horn, weighing in at 6 Kg will get you $500 000 plus change. I'd just sell through an anonymous email account if I were you.

After a third pass through the images, I just saw the hippo in the thumbnail! Bumping up.

Just way to blurry, even for a dream, this just looses perspective.
