The Moody Blues... The white frosted glass of these chess Knights plays nicely into the theme of the song title IMO. I have found great enjoyment in photographing chess pieces lately. This $10 set was a gift from my girlfriend :) Thanks Kim :)

Knights In White Satin

Composition (Content)
Getting a lot of use out of the $10 chess set :-)
I really like the lighting in your shot. It's enough to make the knights standout from the darkness, but not so much as to illuminate the surrounding board and background. Your placement, crop and framing are spot on (*there may be a little more space on the right side of the frame then the left). Darn near perfect I'd say.

Background
I like how the board fades into the darkness. It gives me a feeling the area they are in is much larger then it is. You board is nice and clean too :-)

Camera Work (Technical)
Perfect. You know how to get the most out of your camera.

Digital Processing (Technical)
Sharpening is good(Crisp, no artifacts)
Balance between light and dark is great. (Good tone throughout)
Compression is good(No noticeable compression artifacts)

My opinion
You have truely mastered the art of shooting chess boards. When I get to that phase, I'll give you a call ;-) Seriously, I think that this is one of the stronger compositions. The two knights with their curves against the contrast of the lines in the board have a good yin yang effect and complement each other well. Nice Job.

Good image.

Gee...I always found it relatively easy to play...if you're interested I'll post a couple of versions you can download -- send me an email.

John, beautiful photo. The actual title is spelled "Nights" but I also would have named this photo as you did...

i will never know how so many of the same chess board pictures got in this challenge. maybe everyone got a new set for christmas. the picture is good, but i think it could use about a quarter degree of clockwise rotation

very elegent composition...the framing complets the piece.

Very well taken shot! John, your level of detail is amazing. Great choice of songs! (I'm a little foggy about the satin part, would the finish on the chess pieces be called "satin"? It's O.K. really, just asking) Challenge well met. Neat reflections on the chess board. Score upgrade from 8 to 9. Swash

Excellent photo, the lighting is spot on and I love the way that the board disappears into the background. But wasn't the song called "Nights In White Satin"??!

THis is a 10 for me

Excellent. Reflection chopped, and far peice seems a little soft at the top, would have been a 10 otherwise. Its nice to see a little texture to these studio macros, so often they are flat and lifeless.

Does everyone have one of these chessboards? Very well done - Inspzil

The lighting is perfect. The softness of the pieces really gives the feeling of silk. GREAT job on this one ! = 10
