What a wonderful challenge idea -- I'm so glad it was picked!! I must admit, I'd seen Jan's work in challenges, but I had never really gone through his portfolio before. While each individual picture is interesting by itself, the collection as a whole was truly amazing!

I was completely baffled by some of my favorites. I still have no idea how he could get some of the awesome effects. So I concentrated on something I thought I could do -- the black cat.

I absolutely loved this creation of his:

and I kept thinking: waxed paper...

So I tried waxed paper over the lens, waxed paper taped over a window, backlit with a flash, trying to silhouette the cat.

Ummmm... Utter failure. Couldn't figure out how to do anything with a waxed paper texture.

Then I just tried jumping cat for awhile, that wasn't working well.

I just kept thinking textures... then I thought: shower door!!! So I put a towel down in the shower (it was still a little wet) and put Moriarty in the shower. My son stood on the outside with a toy. Flash in the shower behind Mo, pointing up at the ceiling.

I knew I could get awesome shots of Mo standing up, batting at the glass at the toy!!

Nope.

He just sat there.

Concerned.

He didn't like the shower.

I felt so guilty!!

He paced...

I took a shot.

He wasn't near the front, so you couldn't even see anything but a fuzzy blob that wasn't even cat shaped. The shower door was too opaque.

He paced more.

I felt more guilty!

(It had only been about a minute, but I'm a softie...)

He finally came closer to the glass, looking quite concerned, and I got this shot. The texture isn't the interesting texture of the glass -- it's actually the backlit hard water deposits on the glass!

I gave up after just a couple of minutes, hoping that the one shot was good enough. He just looked too worried!

So we played a game of milk carton ring instead. :)

Thanks for all the wonderful comments! And thanks to Jan for being the inspiration for a great challenge!

Cutout seems to have cat that looks just like this one.. Great choice of model, and the shot itself is something I could easily see Jan doing. Well done!
