Now that I look at this again, I think it might look just fine if you just crop that nasty pole out of there and make it a square crop.

Pretty cool shot hon! Makes me wonder what the kids are saying. Ya never know till it comes out of their mouth! Great tones and depth. Shots like this make me almost want to get out of the city...

Edited to add: Before I clicked the post button, a song popped into my head... Pink Floyd, Time... Heesh I gotta make time...

Geez. The telephone pole is absolutely fantastic in this shot. Could I get a close up?
Jacko.

P.S. That telephone pole reminds me that i have to call my mother. Thank you, thank you !!!

Good shot, but the telephone poles work too hard against the nature of the shot.

A splendid choice of b/w as averse to colour, amongst my favourites from this challenge, 10

This is a powerful image. The sepia tones and the soft/surrealness of the background are wonderful touches. Not sure if this was intended, but the telephone pole resembles a cross. This strengthens the composition and also adds (to me) a religious theme - also tied in with the innocense of youth and the walk down the road. I don't know if thats what you were going for, but that's what the image speaks to me. It invokes emotion. 10

I think the 'tone' of the picture would have been nicer if they were walking towards the camera. The power lines could have been left out of the picture.

"I'll be back soon honey, just going to put the kids down" I love the title, the vague references in here, the power line looming like a crucifix, the black hat. AM I reading too much into it? I also like the weeds and grass on the close right, perhaps too much processing on the more distant weeds, good contrast to make a black adn white appear sepia.

i don't know why, but i feel i've been on this road before...

beautiful capture, really like the duo-toes. composition is flawless and the image is timeless. great job! one of my top picks for the challenge.

For such subject I would prefer centered composition. But, on the other hand, I know, that many people doesn't like it very much. I just feel, that the grass on the right is a bit too much.

Nice story portrayed here. (In Good Hands jumps to mind).
2 boys on a lazy afternoon walk in the country with their Dad. Country, rustic feel.
Just enough touch of civilization with the power lines & pole, yet not distracting.
Well Done ! ((9))

I like the nostalgic feel that the sepia gives to this country scene. The problem I see with this image is that the man's body is large and blocks the view of the road and to where they are going. I also think you could have cropped out the telephone polls in the upper right. 4

Ah - a real "country feel" - a dad taking two of his youngins on a walk. You image invokes a true emotion - exactly what it's supposed to do. I do believe it would be stronger without the telephone pole in the upper right. Great timing on the footsteps - and excellent black and white technique as well.

I think I would rather like this without the grain. Nice sepia colors but the shot seems a bit medicore for this masters challenge.

Love this in the sepia tone. Would have liked to see more of the path in the distance instead of just the peek of it near his sleeve. Great shot!

This is a very good photo for a family album. From an objective point of view, I find it kind of boring. Technically it is good but it is a familiar take on a familiar subject. I'm not seeing anything that really pulls me in. I do like the play of light and shadow on the road. It's just not enough to interest me.

I'm sure I saw this on your web site :-) Nice photo but then I'm a sucker for duotones. -- good luck

Good choice of subject, lighting is appropriate, exposure is well done. The soft focus effect doesn't add much here, though. With the symmetry of the trio, a more centered composition would have put more emphasis on the subjects.

A rather warm scene with wonderful models. The father figure here looks safe, strong and very well secure. This gives this image untold strength. The sepia and long shadows enhance the solid feel of this study. The rural dirt road lends that popular country feeling wgich we all love. Bimping up to 7

Nice atmosphere. The toning probably removed some disturbing colors and created more rest in the image. I would probably have liked a portrait orientation better, cropping out the power lines and adding some more foreground path.

Very nice shot although I think one child may have worked better. I would have found a way to get rid of the telephone pole on the right as well. Good job.

:-) I love shots like this! Rather than focusing on the face etc, we have a shot that makes us think about what the three guys are talking about and doind walking down the lane.

Good choice of sepia, nice and clear with just the right DOF. 9

I really like this shot. A father with his sons. Strikes to the heart as I have 2 sons also. A father can really feel the emotion of this picture. Only one criticism. I would have cropped out the electrical pole and wires on the right side. Otherwise a charming shot.

What a nice shot, so emotive and touching. I love the boys walking with dad idea and the use of the sepia is well chosen. The only thing that bothers me is the balance, it seems a bit heavy on the left with the cropping. I put up my magic envelope and I really like this shot centered better, taking out the pole in the upper right corner. A 9

I think this looks too snapshot-ish. The dark colors of the mans clothing, hair, hat, all kind of blend in with the dark tree background. OK. 6.

10/03/2004 04:54:04 PM
Very Andy Griffith! I mean that as a compliment, too! The older gent is a bit dark, he doesn't stand out well from the darkness of the trees in front of him (er...behind him?)... also too bad the boy's arm didn't get in the shot, because it looks a tad odd. Personally, I would've cropped out the telephone wires on the upper right, as my eye kept getting pulled over there... otherwise, great shot! Thank you!

Very touching image. The duotones and grain works very well here. May need a little burning on the right around the border. Just a suggestion. Nice job.8

Very nice tones! The leading lines of the road, though mostly implied, still work to bring my eyes into the photo. I love the softness of the surrounding vegetation while having nice, sharp focus on the figures. An emotive and lovely image. 8

Maybe a little soft. I wonder if a few more steps down the two track would have provided better lighting. Maybe it would have been to harsh.

Great grab shot. Nicely composed. I would prefer that the head/hat was not lost against the background but you can't have everything.

10/03/2004 06:47:26 AM
Nice shot... conjures up an emotive sense of ennui. I wish the man didn't blend so much into the background though. Not quite sure about the composition... too much room on the left of the frame and the boy on the right is too centered for my taste. It feels like it was an arbitrary decision to frame it like this because you didn't want to be unimaginative and place everything dead centre. The pylons on the right are a bit distracting. 6

I like this photo a lot. The only thing that stops me from giving it a 9 or 10 is the telephone pole on the right hand side. My eyes drfit. Other than that I say great use of the lighting. Great composition and I like the sepia tone to the photo. Beautiful work.

a wonderful momenet captured here. good choice with the toning. I wish dad' shirt wasn;t so dark compared to the other elements in the photo but it tells a good story and is presented well.

Nice capture of an afternoon (or morning) walk of a father and his sons. The duotone and soft focus are also very nice touches. The telephone pole stands out and I feel it should have been cropped out (or cloned out). 8

The walk to where? Something starnge about this shot, gives me a feeling of doom for the kids. Nice tones, but wish the power lines/poles weren't there.

I love the subject of this photo. It's beautiful. I love the cepia tones. It's one of those that really grabs me, but I gave it a 9 because there is some slight out-of-focus on parts of it that I felt would be better clear with a wider depth of field.

I like the concept and toning of this one quite a bit. My only nitpick for this shot is that the guy's head/hat seem to get a little lost in the background. A nice use of sepia (something I'm not usually a fan of).

10/01/2004 09:33:28 AM
I like the sepia effect. The arrangement of the walkers is nice with the left boy on the grass row. I can almost here Dad speaking softly to his boys of nature and life.
I'm probably wrong, but I think this may be the lens of L.B. ? Anyway, great study.

10/01/2004 08:58:03 AM
I think this shot is great. One thing that I personally would have done differently would have been to position your subjects slightly left so that you could see the road leading off the horizion into converging lines. Those kind of pics really work for me!
  Photographer found comment helpful.
10/01/2004 08:33:01 AM
The crop is just off center enough to be distracting, and the power lines steal a bit of my attention. I'm not "anti-power lines", but here they seem to crush the element of "country" that it seems you were after. The photo feels too static to be off center.

10/01/2004 07:39:14 AM
The duotone works well here in my opinion, and the exposure is spot on. The only thing that bothers me is the soft focus effect. I'm not even sure if there is one applied, but some areas, specifically the trees around the man's hat, kinda blend in to other objects. 6

Interesting imagery; the norrow path, the black hat, the cross-like utility pole in the upper right... I only wish the hat wasn't quite so close in tonality to the background shadows in the trees.

I love the moment. Still, like your entry in "Mirrors" I personally think it would have been stronger with a little more noise/grain to it. It's still got a very nice, classic feel, but it might be a little too personal for most voters :)
