Challenge: C2K -- DPC's 2,000th Challenge (Advanced Editing VII*)
Collection: Challenges 2014
Camera: Canon EOS-7D
Lens: Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Location: Manhattan Beach Pier
Date: Sep 7, 2014
Aperture: 4.5
ISO: 4000
Shutter: 1/6
Date Uploaded: Nov 1, 2014

So I've been a member at DPC for a very very long time. I get worse as time goes by as far as score goes. I haven't replaced a shot in my top row in over five years. I have, however, replaced a shot in my BOTTOM row just this past month. Yes, I'm THAT good!

But every once in awhile, I get a near-perfect shot. This is one of those. Oh, it won't score well at all - I suspect a bottom 25%, possibly bottom 10%. The technicals are terrible! But I love this shot. And can you believe the timing? Obviously I didn't plan for that - horribly overexposed in places and all - but what are the odds, you know? In 1/6 of a second, The Photographer hit the shutter on that film camera, and my camera caught the flash. How cool is that?

And the people in it - well, the people are important. If you know who they are, then you know they're important.

I love this shot. A handful of folks may like it almost as much as I do. The general public? Probably not so much. In my entire 12 year archive, I've got nothing that will impress any of you enough to score well, so I'm going with something I love instead.

****

And here is the shot that came from the other camera:

Well, Deb's important too...

What can I say? I'm flattered, honored, maybe a little embarrassed. It was a truly an enjoyable evening. Deb's a wonderful hostess, although I'm beginning to think her motives are selfish! Mine certainly are whenever I call her up to tell her I'll be in town. But we have fun together -- along with whoever's able to join us.

And the photograph. I love it, of course. If "the photographer" were anyone else, I'd be terribly jealous. I suppose the pressure is on now to develop my film and see how this story ends.

By the way, Deb, I have you beat in front page staleness: over six years. Sheesh! Were these children even born then?

Reflexes! This and Brian's print will have to hang side-by-side in the gallery. Great capture!

You made a good choice - to pick a picture that is winning hearts!
Most of us can identify ourselves with this photographer, whose pose is a mixture between dedication and whimsicality...and the moment the flash fired is captured perfectly!

A total whiteout of the important facial features, great technique if you want to retain anonymity! Good luck

I've been agonising over what to do about this photograph. Because I know who 'The Photographer' is (in the picture) and I know who the the photographer is behind your camera. Here's the rub: if I hadn't known I would have given this photograph the most emphatic 10 I could click, without hesitation, as well as the immediate award of the Order of the Thumb with Garland, Diamonds and Ear-Shattering Fanfare. It's not ethical to score a photograph I know the author of, but nobody can prevent my awarding the Thumb. And so I thee endow, with immense pleasure. The 10 is, alas, merely implied.

I love above all other niches that corner of photography that is actually about photography. About celebrating he meaning and place of a photograph as a cultural icon. This is a wonderful visual monograph on The Photograph. Worth the proverbial thousand words.

On a WTF level, the fact that you have captured the light of the flash so perfectly is so improbable as to be miraculous. The photography Gods don't grant that sort of impossible serendipity to any but their most favoured disciples.

OK that's it. Time for the formalities. Kneel.... I dub thee Dame Thumb. Arise. Go forth and keep serving your craft so splendidly. Thank you!

Nice timing. I have seen so many photographs of photographers but never one using the flash

A photograph of a photographer taking a photograph is just not that interesting, especially when its out of focus and has blown highlights. Not that you could have done anything about against his flash.
